### Question 1(i). If (a/3 + 1, b – 2/3) = (5/3, 1/3), find the values of a and b.

Solution:

According to the definition of equality of ordered pairs

(a/3 + 1, b – 2/3) = (5/3, 1/3)

â‡’ a/3 + 1 = 5/3 and b – 2/3 =1/3

â‡’ a/3 = (5 – 3)/3 and b = (1/3 + 2/3)

â‡’ a/3 = 2/3 and b = 3/3

â‡’ a = 2 and b = 1

### Question 1(ii). If (x + 1, 1) = (3, y – 2), find the values of x and y.

Solution:

According to the definition of equality of ordered pairs

(x + 1, 1) = (3, y – 2)

â‡’ x + 1 = 3 and 1 = y – 2

â‡’ x = 3 – 1 and 1 + 2 = y

â‡’ x = 2 and 3 = y

â‡’ x = 2 and y = 3

### Question 2. If the ordered pairs (x, -1) and (5, y) belong to the set {(a, b) : b = 2a – 3}, find the values of x and y.

Solution:

Given:

(x, -1) âˆˆ {(a, b) : b = 2a – 3}

and, (5, y) âˆˆ {(a, b) : b = 2a – 3}

â‡’ -1 = 2 Ã— x – 3 and y = 2 Ã— 5 – 3

â‡’ -1 = 2x – 3 and y = 10 – 3

â‡’ 3 – 1 = 2x and y = 7

### Question 3. If a âˆˆ {- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and b âˆˆ {0, 3, 6}, write the set of all ordered pairs (a, b) such that a + b = 5.

Solution:

Given: a âˆˆ {- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and b âˆˆ {0, 3, 6},

Now, we have to find the ordered pair (a, b) such that a + b = 5

So, the ordered pair (a, b) such that a + b = 5 are as follows

Now we have to find A x B, and B x A

B Ã— A = {1, 3} Ã— {1, 2}

= {(1, 1), (1, 2), (3, 1), (3, 2)}

### Question 6. Let A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {3, 4}. Find A x B and show it graphically

Solution:

Given: A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {3, 4}

Now we have to find A x B

A x B = {1, 2, 3} Ã— {3, 4}

= {(1, 3), (1, 4), (2, 3), (2, 4), (3, 3), (3, 4)}

To draw A x B graphically follow the following steps:

Step 1: Draw horizontal and vertical axis.

Step 2: The horizontal axis represents set A and the vertical axis represents set B.

Step 3: Now, draw dotted lines perpendicular to horizontal and vertical axes through the elements of set A and B

Step 4: Point of intersection of these perpendicular represents A Ã— B

Intersection of two sets represents common elements of both the sets

### Question 8. If A and B two sets having 3 elements in common. If n(A) = 5, n(B) = 4, Find n(A Ã— B) and n[(A Ã— B) âˆ© (B Ã— A)]

Given: n(A) = 5 and n(B) = 4

We know that if A and B are two finite sets, then n(A Ã— B) = n(A) Ã— n(B)

Therefore,

n(A Ã— B) = 5 Ã— 4 = 20

Now,

n[(A Ã— B) âˆ© (B Ã— A)] = 3 Ã— 3 = 9          -(âˆµ A and B have 3 common elements)
