OPTUM UHG Work Experience as an Intern

I got selected as a software intern at OPTUM UHG for a summer internship. I worked there for 2 months from 16 May to 16 July. It was an on-campus opportunity.

It was an amazing experience as it was my first time working as a professional. My time spent interning at Optum resulted in one of the best summers of my life. Not only did I gain practical skills but I also had the opportunity to meet many fantastic people.

Even though it was all virtual, I could feel the welcoming atmosphere that I would’ve felt at the office. Besides, I felt like I was able to contribute to the company by assisting and working on projects throughout the summer. I am glad that I got the opportunity to work with this incredible team.

COMPANY OVERVIEW:

Optum is an American healthcare service provider. It is a part of United Healthcare Group UHG. It was founded in 2011. It is a healthcare company making healthcare services better for people. Its headquarters are present at Eden Prairie, Minnesota, U.S. Its offices are located at various locations such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Noida, Gurgaon, Philippines, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

My team worked on a data analytics project. The project was related to hiring data such as organizing employees’ work anniversaries, employees joining the organization, etc. The tasks assigned to me were:

• I learned Power BI and SQL.
• For Power BI Training: I learned data cleaning, data transformations, creating visualizations and data modeling and etc.
• I have worked on Power BI dashboards which were connected to SQL servers.
• For SQL training: I learned to write queries.
• The project I worked on was related to Hiring data.
• I built a tracker to capture the sourcing status of the requisition. Sourcing status – means at what stage the request is.
• There were different stages FP(Fulfillment partner) Review, HM (Hiring Manager) Review, Sourcing Externally, and Sourcing Internally. (Sourcing – Approval process)
• I built the asset that captures the latest status in a table using a stored procedure.
• I built one view from where the data goes to that table.
• Entitled this table’s sourcing status to another view which is connected to the structural power app and power bi dashboard.
• Modified the app & dashboard to include those required fields.

PROS:

1. SUPPORTING TEAM: My teammates were all welcoming and all of them supported me and guided me whenever I was stuck. My mentor always made sure that I was giving my best and I learnt a lot from her.
2. TEAMWORK: As it was my first time working as a professional, I learned to work in a team.

Overall, my internship at Optum has been a great success! I was able to gain practical skills, work in a fantastic environment and make connections that will last a lifetime. I could not be more thankful.
The experience gained here will surely encourage me to drive through the corporate world.

I would like to thank all my teammates for their support and mentorship throughout my internship which has taught me a lot.
