There were 3 rounds of selection in total :

  • Online Assessment
  • Technical Interview
  • HR Interview

Online Assessment:

  • This Online Assessment was scheduled for 90 mins with all the multiple-choice questions. Questions were based on Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability, along with technical domains like OOPs, OS, CN, C++, Java, Python, Data structures and algorithms, software engineering, etc.

Technical Interview:

  • The technical Interview was around 40-50 mins long. We began with the very first and basic questions of all the interviews i.e. my introduction. After that, he asked me questions based on OOPs specifically from inheritance. Then we quickly moved to other domains, like Computer Networking (asked about network topology), then some basic questions about Software Engineering (like waterfall method or agile methodology, etc). He continued to ask some more questions on cloud computing (how it work), and so on… It was not that well as I was not able to answer all the questions but responded with everything I knew. He then asked me to share my screen and he switched to web development.
  • He asked me to quickly create a basic web page with a notepad and then asked me about class selectors, and asked if inheritance is possible in classes used in HTML, and CSS. I responded that since it is not a programming language but it is used for formatting and styling purposes only. He somehow wanted to ask me about Object Oriented CSS Coding paradigm and for that reason we revolved around inheritance and CSS. Thereon, after the Web development round, he asked me to make a simple C++ program to display the middle character of a string if it’s odd and display the 2 characters in the middle. I coded it along with some other added functionalities very quickly.
  • And, after all of these rounds, I asked him some questions about the company, what qualities they are seeking in an intern, and why one should choose Optum over another company. In this way, our Technical Round was over.

HR Interview:

  • This Interview ended in less than 15 mins. As the HR round started, he asked me, Why do you want to join Optum? Why should you be selected over others? What are my future plans? And this round went by very quickly as there were 20 other students waiting and surprisingly all were selected and no one was disqualified in the HR Interview Round.

TIPS (Optum Specific):

  1. Stay Calm, and Respond Confidently.
  2. As for Optum specifically, it was very easy to get selected, just the quick overviews of different domains are required, they don’t expect you to be very good at all the domains.
  3. There was no good DSA-related question that I was expecting.
