You’re standing on the surface of the Earth. You walk one mile south, one mile west, and one mile north. You end up exactly where you started. Where are you? think of a solution to the problem.
Puzzle – Find the position in the globe
Solution:
The answer to this classic puzzle is that you must be standing at the North Pole.
Explanation:
- Imagine you’re standing at the North Pole. If you were to walk one mile directly south, you would be moving away from the North Pole, which means toward the equator (the imaginary line that goes around the middle of the Earth).
- Now, if you will walk one mile west, you would be walking in a circle around the North Pole, but at a lower latitude (i.e., you would be closer to the equator). This is because when you’re at the North Pole, all directions lead south, and as you walk west, you are circling the Earth.
- Finally, if you were to turn and walk one mile directly north, you would end up back at the North Pole! This is because you’ve walked in a circle around the North Pole, and ended up exactly where you started.
- So, the answer to the puzzle is that you must have been standing at the North Pole, to begin with. If you were at any other point on Earth, you wouldn’t end up back where you started by walking one mile south, one mile west, and one mile north.
