Ramsar Convention: An Introduction

  • The Ramsar Convention was signed in 1971 with the aim of “the conservation and wise use of wetlands in domestic, national and international cooperation for the overall sustainable development of the world”. 
     
  •  Ramsar sites are included in the Montreux Record to track any major ecological changes that may have a positive or reverse impact on any of the wetlands. 
     
  • The Ramsar Convention came into force in India on  February 1, 1982. 
     
  • India currently has 75  sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance. This is the highest in South Asia.
