Important Facts on Harappan Sites-

  • The Harappan civilization is considered to be the starting point of a long and varied story of Indian culture.  
  • The Harappan civilization originated in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent against the Chalcolithic background. 
  • We also know the Indus Valley Civilization as the name of a Bronze Age civilization. 
  • It is also known as the Harappan culture, as this civilization was first detected in 1921 from the Harappan site located in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
  • The Harappan culture included not only parts of Punjab, Sindh, and Baluchistan but also the frontier parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh. 
  • The spread of this Indus civilization is from Jammu in the north to the Narmada river in the south. Its spread extended from Alamgirpur in the east to Sutkagendor in the west.
  • The expansion of the entire Indus civilization was about 12,99,600 square kilometres.
  • The sites of the Harappan civilization are divided into the following phases-
  • The first phase is known as the Pre-Harappan period, Mehrgarh, Kiligulmuhammad, and Ranaghundai were prominent among the sites of this phase.
  • The second phase is known as the Early Harappan period, the sites of this phase were Amri, Kotdiji, Ganeshwar, Kalibanga, etc.
  • The third phase is known as the Mature Harappan period. Harappa, Mohenjodaro, and Lothal were prominent among the sites of this phase.
