Indian Army: An Introduction

  • The Indian Army was established in Calcutta in 1776 during the rule of the East India Company. 
     
  • The Siachen Glacier is the highest battlefield in the world at 5000 meters above sea level. It is occupied by the Indian Army. 
     
  • The Bailey Bridge is the largest in the world and is located between the Dras and Suru rivers in the Himalayas. It was built by the Indian Army in 1982. The Indian Army is the third largest military competitor in the world after the United States and China. 
     
  • Compared to other governmental organizations, the Indian Armed Forces does not have a reservation system based on caste or religion. 
     
  • In 2013, ‘Operation Rahat’, carried out to rescue the Uttarakhand flood victims, was the world’s largest civilian rescue operation. 
     
  • The Presidential Bodyguard is the oldest military contingent in the Indian Army. It was founded in 1773. It is currently being stationed at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. 
     
  • Indian soldiers are considered the best for wars in the highest mountains. 
     
  • In December 1971 in the battle of Longewala between India and Pakistan only 2 soldiers were killed. The Bollywood film Border was also filmed during this war. The battle was fought between 120 Indian soldiers escorted by 4 Hunter fighter jets and 2,000-3,000 Pakistani soldiers escorted by 30-40 tanks. 
     
  • The Indian Army is the largest volunteer army in the world,  Indian Army has the largest number of soldiers in the world. 
     
  • High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) is run by the Indian Army in the most elite military training in the world. The special forces of the United States, England, and Russia participated before invading Afghanistan. 
     
  • India conducted nuclear tests in 1970 and 1990. The CIA, the most powerful intelligence agency in the world, is about this test. None were found, and this is the CIA’s biggest failure to date. 
     
  • The Indian Army also has a cavalry regiment. There are only three such regiments in the world. 
     
  • Indian Air Force has a forward station in Tajikistan. After Tajikistan,  the Indian Army will now establish its base in Afghanistan. 
     
  • Military Engineering Services (MES) is one of the largest construction agencies in India. The MES and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) are responsible for the construction and maintenance of India’s most luxurious roads. Responsibility for maintaining roads such as Khardungla (the highest road in the world) and magnetized hilltop remains rests with the MES. 
     
  • The 1971 war between India and Pakistan ended at this time. When 93,000 Pakistan Army soldiers surrendered to the Indian Army. This was the largest surrender conducted by the Pakistan Army since World War II. 
    Numerous popular figures receive honorary degrees from the Armed Forces.
