Important facts about the Indian Navy :

  • Originally designated as the Royal Indian Navy, our supreme naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces was formed by the East India Company in 1612 and renamed the Indian Navy after independence on 26 January 1950.   
     
  • The Royal Indian Navy Mutiny was a rebellion by 20,000 Indian seamen in 1946 against  British discriminatory policies, but the movement was founded due to a lack of support.   
     
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosale is considered as the father of the Indian Navy. He established a strong naval presence off the coast of Konkan and Goa to protect maritime trade. 
     
  • On December 4, the Indian Navy launched Operation Trident and attacked the Pakistan Navy HQ in Karachi, sinking a minesweeper, a destroyer, and an ammunition supply ship. Operation Python followed on December 8, 1971. The day got celebrated as Navy Day. 
     
  • Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari was the first Indian to assume the position of Chief of Staff of the Indian Navy on 22 April  1958. 
     
  • The first Indian to receive a permanent commission was Second Lieutenant D.N.Mukerji. 
     
  • Indian Navy Ensign still incorporates the St. George’s Cross design, the flag of England, but a new design consisting of the national emblem on the intersecting cross. 
     
  • The Indian Navy’s first independent mission was against the Portuguese Navy during the liberation of Goa in 1961. 
     
  • The Indian Navy is among the largest naval forces in the world, with a force of 58,350 men and a large operational fleet. The Indian Navy launched Operation Talwar during the Kargil War as part of the more massive Operation Vijay. The Indian Navy also conducted three international operations. 
     
  • CDr. MRS. Kohli of the Indian Navy led the country’s first successful expedition to Mount Everest by a military officer in 1965.
     
  • INS (Indian Naval Ship) Vikrant was the Indian Navy’s first aircraft carrier
     
  • The first aircraft carrier built in India was the INS Vikrant named after 1st aircraft carrier of India. Today, most ships and submarines are made locally. 
     
  • INS Arihant is the first ballistic missile submarine built by a country that is not a member of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. 
     
  • The Barak 8 missile, a surface-to-air missile developed by India and Israel, is deployed by Indian Navy ships. As part of Project 17-A, the Indian Navy will build seven Shivalik-class stealth frigates. 
     
  • The INS Zamorin in Ezhimala in Kerala is the largest naval academy in Asia. 
     
  • In 2009, following the 26 November 2009 attack on Mumbai, a force called Sagar Prahari Bal (SPB) was formed to patrol coastal areas. 
     
  • Marine Commandos (MARCOS) is the  Indian Navy’s Special Operations Unit, also known as “The Dadiwali Fauj”. The Navy Commandos (MARCOS) have one of the highest desertions during training. There are only two naval aerobatic teams in the world and one is our country’s navy and it is called Sagar Pawan.
     
  • The Indian Navy uses a multi-brand communications satellite called GSAT-7, which has improved capacity many times over. 
     
  • The Indian Navy, due to constant improvements, will remain the most powerful naval force in the entire Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea.
