Most people make their emails when they are in their teens. And well, when you are in your teenage years, you get influenced by many crazy shows and people around you. The names of these people/characters of your favorite show then end up as your username and email addresses.

We know how embarrassing it can get when you grow old and pass the “crazy teenage” phase to enter the world where you must share your mail addresses with your managers and employers. This is when you need to change the email name and address to an appropriate one.

How to Change Your Email Name

If you think that your Gmail name and Google account name need to be the same, then dear friend here’s an eye-opener for you. Your Gmail name and your Google account name are the same by default, but you can change them to your whim and fancy. If you want to, you can choose to either change only your Gmail name or change your Google account name. However, keep in mind that changing your Google account name changes your name across all your Google apps.

How to Change Your Gmail Name Only?

As convenient as it is to use your mail on your mobile app, these settings can only be done on your browser site. 

  • First, sign in to your Google account using your username and password. 
  • Then, click on the Gear icon located in the top right corner of your screen and select “See all settings.” 
  • Next, click on the “Accounts and Import” tab.

  • Under the “Send mail as” header, click on the “edit info” button.

  • Here, you can enter the new name you want your emails to display. 
  • Don’t forget to tick the button next to it and click “Save Changes” to finalize your new display name.

How to Change Your Google Account Name?

You can change your Gmail name without affecting your Google account name. However, this is not the case when you change your Google account name. As s default setting, if you change your Google Account Name, your Gmail name will also change.

Besides, this same name would then show up across all other Google apps. 

If you still wish to proceed, here’s how to do this:

  • Sign in to your account and navigate to the Personal info tab in the left sidebar.

  • From there, click on the Name tab and edit your first and/or last name.

  • Finally, click the Save button to save your changes.

How to Change Your Email Address (Username) in Gmail

We know that there are times when it is really a necessity to your existing Google username or email address—but Google just doesn’t allow it (at least for most users). Yes, but you can still give the below-mentioned steps a try. Maybe you are one of the lucky Gmail users who get to change their username. Besides, if you have a G Suite account, you may find it easier to change your username. Ask your G Suite administrator for help.

How to Change Your Existing Email Address

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to change your existing email address in Gmail.

Note –Please don’t have high expectations as Google doesn’t permit this feature for most users.

Step 1: Log in to your Google Account and click on Personal info. 

Step 2: Under Contact info, click EMAIL and then Google Account email. 

If you’re able to open this setting, select edit next to the email address you want to change and follow the on-screen instructions. 

However, if you can’t access this setting, you’ll need to create a new email address.

Step 3 (If you can click on Google Account email): Select Edit, next to the email address you want to change. Enter the new email address for your account and follow the on-screen instructions.

How to Create a New Gmail Account

  • Start by going to the Google Account sign-in page.
  • Once there, click on the “Create account” button. 
  • You will then be prompted to enter your name. 
  • Make sure to enter your full name as it appears on your legal documents.
  • Next, you will need to choose a username. This will be the name that you use to sign in to your Google account. It can be anything you like, as long as it is not already taken by someone else. 
  • Once you have chosen a username, enter and confirm your password. 
  • Make sure to choose a strong password that is difficult for others to guess.
  • After you have entered your password, click on the “Next” button. 
  • You will then have the option to add and verify a phone number for your account. This is an optional step, but it can be helpful if you ever need to recover your account or reset your password.
  • Finally, click on the “Next” button and follow the on-screen instructions carefully. You may be asked to provide additional information, such as your date of birth or your location. 
  • Once you have completed all of the steps, your Google account will be created and you will be able to start using it right away.

How to Import Data from an Existing Account to a New Gmail Account?

Now that you have created a new Gmail, here’s how you can import your data.

Step 1: Generate a fresh Gmail account and access it by logging in.

Step 2: To access your account settings, click on the gear icon located in the top right corner of your mailbox. Then, select “Settings” from the drop-down menu that appears.

Step 3: If you have a Gmail account that has a regular ending of gmail.com, then you should select the Accounts and Import tab.

Step 4: Click on the option “Import mail and contacts” located in the section for importing mail and contacts.

Step 5: A fresh browser window will appear and prompt you to enter your old address in the text box. 
 

  • After clicking the Continue button, you will be asked to log in to your old mail account. 
  • Open a new browser tab and sign in to your old account. 
  • You will now be signed in to both your old and new addresses.

Step 6: After logging in to your previous account, select Continue. 

  • A new window will appear, requesting permission to access your previous email account. 
  • Once you give permission, you will receive a notification indicating whether the authentication was successful.
     

Step 7: Please close this current window and navigate to the previous pop-up window where your new account is located. 

  • From there, choose the import settings for your old email account. 
  • You have the option to import your contacts, and previous emails, and even forward any new emails from your old account to your new one for the next 30 days. 
  • Once you have selected your desired options, click on the Start import button to begin the process.
     

Step 8: Once the import process is done, a message indicating completion will appear on the screen.

Step 9: Refresh your newly created Gmail account to see the messages from your previous email account. 

These messages will be located in a folder with the name of your old account.

Voila!

Note – Please click on the “stop” button in the “Import mail and contacts” section to halt the importing process.

Lengthy as it might seem in this blog, it will not take more than 15 minutes of your time to finish the entire process. After all, making an account takes very little time and no money. So, create as many accounts as you fancy with as creative usernames/addresses as you can!
