Who is Venkat Panchapakesan and what this scholarship is all about?

Engineer Venkat was well-liked and held in high regard. His career carried him to organizations like YouTube, Google, and Yahoo, among others. After a fight with cancer, he tragically died too soon. He left a lasting impression on his friends, family, and coworkers during his brief life. To give tribute to him, this scholarship is organized every year in his memory.

In addition to being invited to visit the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, the chosen students will also receive a monetary prize of 750 USD to help with tuition and other educational costs. Additionally, chosen students will have the chance to submit a proposal for consideration. If chosen, they could be awarded up to USD 225 to support the spread of computer science in their area.

Eligibility:

Enrolled in an undergraduate program with computer science or any other closely related field.

A one-time scholarship, the Venkat Panchapakesan Memorial Scholarship. However, prior winners of any Google prize, including the Venkat Panchapakesan Memorial prize, are regretfully ineligible to apply. Previous applicants are invited to submit a new application.

Application Process:

1. Write an essay (300 words maximum) to tell us about the following:

  • a. How do you plan to use computer science to make the world a more sustainable place?
  • b. If you receive this scholarship, how will you use it to advance your passion and the goals of this scholarship?

2. Write an essay (250 words maximum) to tell us about the following: What adversity have you faced, and how did it impact your career? Please explain the steps you took to overcome it.

After the application is submitted successfully, you will get a mail if you are shortlisted to give the test. As per your submitted essays they filter out students and send the test links.

Online Test:

It consisted of two coding questions to be solved in an hour which was of medium to high difficulty.

Upon passing the eligibility criteria of their test, you will receive a mail if selected for the interview.

Interview:

The interview was of medium to high difficulty. It started with an introduction and then moved forward to DSA questions which mainly revolved around topics like Trees, Linked Lists, and Graphs. We had to give the approach first and then code it in front of the interviewer. Further, the round was more of Computer Fundamental Subjects like OOPS, CN, DBMS, OS, etc. Last, but not least, resume-based questions about the project, your approach to it and the thought process behind it, and finally some behavioral questions.

Only 6 people all over the country were selected.
