The first mode of selection was based on resumes. A format was shared with us and we had to prepare our resumes accordingly. I think the CGPA Cutoff for applying was about 6 gpa. About 700 students applied for the role and after the resume-based shortlisting, around 140 of us were selected for the Online Assessment. I’d recommend explaining your extracurricular activities internship work and positions of responsibility properly in the resume.

Online Assessment:

The online assessment consisted of 20 questions which were to be completed in 60 minutes. There was a negative marking as well. The marking scheme was +1 -0.25. Make sure to manage your time well here. I chose to answer the Data Interpretation questions first(There were 10 of them, 2 questions with 5 sub-divisions each). This took up a major chunk of my time. After that, I headed to the other questions which were like case studies about startups and follow-up questions about them and marketing and consumer mindset, etc. I answered 19 out of 20 questions.

Workshop:

23 people were shortlisted for the 1st round of interviews. Bain had organized a workshop 2 days before the interview for all the shortlisted candidates where they talked about the company and the interview process. They also covered the basics of Guesstimates and Case studies and gave us some tips on how to go about solving them. The session was for 1.5 hours.

1st round:

The interviews were conducted online. Mine started with the interviewer introducing himself and asking me about myself as well. He asked me to pick out something from my resume and explain it next. I talked about the work I had done during my internship. We then talked about businesses and which kind I liked. There were follow-up questions and scenario-based questions that involved me facing a crisis in my startup and how I would go about solving it. He seemed quite satisfied with my answer and I asked him if there was any other way to solve the crisis. He told me that he wanted to pick my brain and the answer I gave was sufficient. Since I was shortlisted for the Retail CoE, he asked me if I was interested in the Retail Industry and some channels of distribution of Products. We proceeded to the Guesstimate after this. The question I was asked was ” At any point in time, How many Cars are present in India? Given the average life span of a car is 10 years”. I did the necessary calculations and came up with an acceptable number. The interview lasted for about 40 minutes.

2nd round:

Only 3 people were shortlisted for the next round. The interview started with some HR-type questions. The interviewer asked me about myself, my responsibilities and achievements in the College Clubs, and Why I Would like to join Bain. Then he asked me some questions about the Retail industry and what I like about it. We then solved a market entry case study together. I asked many follow-up questions after the problem statement was given to me which I don’t think the interviewer liked and I was interrupted mid-sentence before I could put my point across and whenever I tried to say something of importance. This put me off a little but I solved the problem and gave him the required solution and answer.

Final Selection:

2 people were offered the internship. Unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them.

I hope this article was helpful! All the best for Bain!
