Here is what I learned from my recent attendance at the Caterpillar on-campus internship campaign on our campus.

Initially, the company set the eligibility criteria as a minimum of 7.5 CGPA in the present degree with no Standing arrears. The eligible branches were: BE/BTech- CSE, IT, ECE, EEE, and CSE with Specialization

There were 3 rounds in total:

Round 1 (Online Aptitude Assessment)

602 students took the test. The AMCAT platform served as the venue for this round. The round comprises general aptitude questions (Quants, Verbal, Logical, and Technical). In the AMCAT platform, you will not be able to go to the next question until you answer the current question, so you have to attempt each and every MCQ.

Round 2 (Online Coding)

Around 250 students were shortlisted for this round. This round was also conducted on the AMCAT platform. Here in this round, you will get 2 coding questions to solve. The questions were quite easy in this section.

I have 2 coding questions which are as follows:

  • Question 1: Count the occurrence of a given character in a string

  • Question 2: Given the value of S, N, and M. Calculate (((S^N%10)^M)%1000000007)

have

Round 3 (Group Discussion)

Around 120 students were shortlisted for the Group Discussion Round. The students were divided into a group of 7-8.

And some General topics were provided to me which are:

  • Impact of mobile gaming on youth.
  • Fake news and its impact on society.

You can refer to this website for Group Discussion preparation:

https://www.groupdiscussionideas.com/

Two topics will be provided to each group and the preparation time will be 2 minutes.

This Group Discussion round lasted for 30 minutes with two-panel members who will observe your communication and inter-personal skills.

Round 4 (Final Interview: Technical + HR)

Around 60 students were shortlisted for the final round.

Here you can expect questions based on the projects that are mentioned in your resume and the topics related to it.

My interview started with the classical question “Introduce yourself.” And I began to walk them through my educational background, internships, technical strengths, and my hobbies.

Next, the interviewer asked questions regarding my internship. Here I mentioned the following:

  • The problem statement
  • The technologies used
  • The overall outcome
  • The challenges faced during the internship.

Next, I was asked to explain all my projects in brief. Here also I followed the same pattern and told them about

  • The Project title
  • The technologies used
  • The overall outcome
  • The challenges faced while making the project

After explaining all my projects, the interviewer started to ask some questions related to SQL as it was mentioned in my resume.

Here I encountered some basic SQL questions like:

  • What are the differences between JOINS and CONCATENATION?
  • What distinguishes a WHERE clause from a HAVING clause?

You can also expect some basic questions from DBMS, OPPs, and Data structures.

After this, the interviewer asked questions regarding my domain (Machine Learning and Data Science).

After this, I faced a managerial question “Where do you see yourself in the future?”

Finally, after 20-30 minutes my interview ended.

In the end, results were announced and the company selected 10 students for the internship.

Unfortunately, I was not selected for the internship, but I was happy to gain an interview experience

Hope this information is useful to you 🙂

All the best!
