Participating in the Caterpillar on-campus internship campaign provided a firsthand experience of the meticulous and structured recruitment process employed by the company. The initial eligibility prerequisites established by Caterpillar mandated a commendable minimum CGPA of 7.5 without any standing arrears in the ongoing degree program. The specified eligible branches encompassed a diverse range, including BE/BTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), along with CSE with specialization.

The recruitment process was meticulously structured and comprised four distinct rounds, each serving as a vital evaluative phase in the selection process.

Round 1: Online Aptitude Assessment

The inaugural phase of the selection process transpired through the AMCAT platform. This round meticulously assessed candidates across general aptitude domains encompassing Quants, Verbal, Logical, and technical sections. An interesting aspect of this phase was the structured format, wherein candidates were required to answer each multiple-choice question before advancing to the subsequent one, ensuring a comprehensive attempt of all questions.

Round 2: Online Coding

Continuing the evaluation on the AMCAT platform, the second round entailed candidates facing two coding questions. Notably, the questions were designed to provide a balanced challenge, offering an appropriate level of complexity to the participants.

Round 3: Group Discussion

Advancing to the Group Discussion round was contingent upon being shortlisted from the previous assessments. Approximately 120 candidates progressed to this phase, where they were strategically divided into groups comprising 7-8 individuals. The topics allocated for discussion were intellectually stimulating, including the impact of mobile gaming on youth, the societal repercussions of fake news, and the evolving significance of electric vehicles. The evaluative criteria for this round were centred around communication fluency, articulation skills, and the ability to engage in constructive discussions.

Despite my active participation, I did not secure a position following the Group Discussion. Nonetheless, the exposure and experience garnered through this stage were instrumental and deeply enriching.

Round 4: Final Interview (Technical + HR)

This phase primarily scrutinized the projects showcased in my resume. I provided comprehensive insights into each project, elucidating the project title, technologies employed, achieved outcomes, and challenges encountered during their execution. Subsequently, the interviewer delved into SQL-related inquiries based on the expertise highlighted in my resume.

Ultimately, Caterpillar announced the selection of 10 candidates for the internship position, signifying the culmination of a rigorous yet rewarding recruitment journey. The process, though challenging, served as a valuable learning experience, offering insights into Caterpillar’s discerning selection criteria and reinforcing the importance of comprehensive preparation in securing coveted internship positions.
