A computer system consists of various input and output devices. A mouse is a hardware input device for a computer system. A mouse is used to control the cursor on the system. According to the movement of the mouse, the cursor on the monitor display also moves. Mouse are wired or wireless. There are various kinds of mouse. The below article covers this in detail about mechanical mouse.

What is a Mechanical Mouse?

A mechanical mouse is defined as a hardware device used with computer system for providing the input. A mechanical mouse consists of a metal ball or rubber ball at its underside. The mechanical mouse is also known as the ball mouse. The ball rolls when the user moves the mouse. The sensors present inside the mouse will detect the movement and send the signals to the cursor present on the screen. Mechanical mice are heavy in weight. Mechanical mouse are now replaced by lightweight and cost-effective optical mouse. The advantage of mechanical mouse is that they even operate on a rough surface.

Components of Mechanical Mouse

Mechanical mouse is made up of various external and internal components. They are described below.

1. External Components

Mechanical mouse consist some external components.

  • Right button/ Left button: When any of the button is being clicked it triggers the chip and accordingly chip sends the signal to system.
  • Rubber ball: When the mouse is moved the ball will rotates over the surface by the user.
  • Scroll: With the help of scroll users can scroll the page up or down in the vertical direction.
  • Sliders: Sliders help to make the movement easily on smooth surface.
  • Cables: Cable are used to connect mouse with the local machine.
  • Covers: Covers are used to protect the internal circuits.

2. Internal Components

Mechanical mouse consist some internal component as shown below.

  • Switches: When user clicks on right and left button switch receives the impulses.
  • Hardware controller: Hardware controller is responsible for processing the signals that are produced by mouse and then sends it to wave emitter.
  • Mechanical sensors: Mechanical sensors work with spears and generates the impulses that interpretes on the monitor screen.
  • Wheel: Wheel is a button that helps to raise and lower and the display screen vertically.
  • Cable: Cable is used to sent the received signals to the computer ports.

Advantages of Mechanical Mouse

  • Better Quality: Mechanical Mouse are developed with high quality materials therefore they are more robust and even have a longer life as compared to optical mouse.
  • Improved accuracy: Mechanical Mouse posses the property of tracking. For detecting the movement physical ball is being used in mechanical mouse with results into improved accuracy.
  • Works on rough surface: Mechanical mouse can work on various surfaces specially for rough surface. Therefore there is no restriction of smooth or proper surface for mechanical mouse.
  • Durable: Mechanical mouse consists of various parts that are less delicate. They can be used on rough surface and are less prone to damage.

Disadvantages of Mechanical Mouse

  • Surface dependency: Although mechanical mouse can work effectively for rough surface but are easily prone to dust and dirt. Due to this it can affect the ball and sensors and can reduce the tracking quality of mouse.
  • Continuous cleaning and maintenance of sensors and ball: As mechanical mouse can work at rough surfaces they are easily prone to dust and dirt. Therefore user needs to regularly clean and maintain the sensors and balls of the mouse.
  • Weight and size: Mechanical Mouse are heavier in weight and size as compared to optical mouse. Mechanical mouse is therefore less effective for users those who choose lightweight and small mouse.

FAQs on Mechanical Mouse
