This is Aanchal Sikarwar pursuing a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur. The following paragraphs provide an overview of the common experiences in engineering colleges. The terms “college” and “university” often conjure images of parties, fun, road trips, and new acquaintances for high school students gearing up for entrance exams. This shared anticipation drives students to work harder, as clearing competitive exams becomes their ticket to that college life. However, the reality of college is akin to a survival battle, where “survival of the fittest” applies aptly. In engineering colleges, choices around priorities become a recurring theme. Daily decisions encompass attending classes, developing skills, engaging in clubs, pursuing passions, and, particularly for financially challenged students, seeking income sources. The traditional teaching methods can challenge students’ commitment to engineering due to their teaching approach. The burden of assignments, lab work, and attendance requirements can erode the hope for meaningful learning.

Challenges can be examined step by step. First, managing academics involves weighing the value of attending lectures versus skipping them for exam preparation. Some classes prioritize attendance over meaningful learning, which frustrates students. Labs play a role in the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and are influenced by attendance, neatness of lab manuals, and viva performance. Active participation in experiments and mastering the basics are crucial for success. Co-curricular activities in clubs offer opportunities for students to showcase talents in various areas, requiring a balance between academics and co-curriculars. Maintaining mental and physical health simultaneously is a priority, and students can focus on genuine club interests, dedicate time daily to skill development, learn to say no to prevent exploitation, cultivate close-knit friend groups, and prioritize adequate sleep for optimal brain function during exams and classes peers.
