III. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words).

Que 1. What kind of teachers did Margie and Tommy have?

Answer-

Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers. They were taught on computers & TV screens. They didn’t have a living human being as a teacher who used to teach pupils in a classroom.

Que 2. Why did Margie’s mother send for the County Inspector?

Answer-

Margie was given test after test in geography by her mechanical teacher due to which she had been performing worse. As it was not performing efficiently, Margie’s mother called the County Inspector.

Que 3. What did he do?

Answer-

He slowed down the mechanical teacher’s speed up to an average 10-year level. As per IQ level of Margie, the mechanical teacher’s speed was controlled & adjusted.

Que 4. Why was Margie doing badly in geography? What did the County Inspector do to help her?

Answer-

As the mechanical teacher was very fast in displaying the questionnaire, it led to Margie performing badly in Geography. So, the County Inspector adjusted its speed up to an average 10-year level. This is how the mechanical teacher’s speed was controlled appropriately. Also, the County Inspector assured me that Margie’s progress pattern, overall was quite satisfactory.

Que 5. What had once happened to Tommy’s teacher?

Answer-

 The history sector had blanked out completely, so Tommy’s teacher was taken away for nearly a month. Tommy had nothing to do, only relaxed & enjoyed during this period.

Que 6. Did Margie have regular days & hours for school? If so, why?

Answer-

Margie’s mother thought that little girls learned better when they learned at regular hours. Hence, she had regular days & hours for school.

Que 7. How does Tommy describe the old kind of school?

Answer-

Tommy described the old schools as being different as they had a special building where all the kids studied. They laughed & shouted in the schoolyard. They enjoyed their time together & learned lessons together in a classroom.

He said that the old teachers did not live in the house. They had a special building where all the kids went. They gave homework to students. They were living human beings & not mechanical teachers.

IV. Answer each of these questions in two or three paragraphs. (100-150 words).

Que 1. What are the main features of the mechanical teachers & the schoolrooms that Margie & Tommy have in the story?

Answer-

Both Margie & Tommy have mechanical teachers. They need not go to school to gain formal education. The mechanical teacher is placed in one of the rooms of the house & they can get knowledge of various subjects from the mechanical teacher on an individual basis. They don’t have classrooms where students sit together. As they study from the tele books, they don’t require books & exercise books. The examination system is very different. They do homework in a different way. Margie has to write them out in a punch code which she learned when she was six years old. So their education system is technologically advanced & not based on printed books.

Que 2. Why did Margie hate school? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?

Answer-

The reason why Margie hated school was that she had a mechanical teacher. It was in her house. She had to complete her home task or assignments by sitting all alone in that room. What Margie hated the most was the part in which she had to put homework & test papers in a slot. 

She found the old schools better as the students sat together in the classroom, accompanied by enjoying, laughing & shouting in the schoolyard. In order to enhance their skills, children needed company. If isolated, they get depressed & dejected.

Que 3. Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.

Answer-

Yes, undoubtedly, today’s schools are funnier than the future school discussed in the story. The future school has nothing to offer except a mechanical teacher who lacks emotions and sentiments & is unable to understand the child’s psychology. Moreover, it guides a pupil as per its adjusted modes. But today’s schools work for the overall development of a child. They learn the same thing. The teachers are real human beings. They learn how to adapt themselves according to their new surroundings & cope with strangers. The students sit & learn together. These activities don’t give way to feelings of depression, alienation & segregation.

Thinking about Language

I. Adverbs

Remember: An adverb is used to describe an action. One can form adverbs by adding -ly to adjectives.

Spelling Note: When an adjective ends in -y, the y changes to I when you add -ly to form an adverb.
For example, angr-y → angr-i-ly

Read this sentence taken from the story:

They had once taken Tommy’s teacher away for nearly a month because the history sector had blanked out completely. The word complete is an adjective. When you add –ly to it, it becomes an adverb.

Que 1. Find the sentences in the lesson which match the adverbs given in the box below.

Question 3. Make adverbs from these adjectives.

II. If not & Unless

Imagine that Margie’s mother told her, “You’ll feel awful if you don’t finish your history lesson.”
• She could also say: “You’ll feel awful unless you finish your history lesson.” Unless means if not.

Sentences with unless or if not are negative conditional sentences.

Notice that these sentences have two parts.

a) The part that begins with if not or unless tells us the condition. This part has a verb in the present tense (see the verbs don’t finish, finish in the sentences above).

b) The other part of the sentence tells us about a possible result. It tells us what will happen (if something else doesn’t happen). The verb in this part of the sentence is in the future tense (you’ll feel you will feel).

Notice these two tenses again in the following examples:

I would like to put forth my views in favor of the motion “The Schools of the Future Will Have No Books and No Teachers!”

The schools of the future will be way different from the present schooling system. With the emergence of computers, Artificial Intelligence, Humanoid Robots & other digital technologies, etc. one can’t imagine what these schools will look like. The widespread availability of internet links will improve accessibility to education, especially in far, distant & remote lands. One will see, innovative educational & application software. We can also expect to see a change in the parental attitude towards their child’s education. Non-availability of skilled, competent & experienced teachers will be compensated with the emergence of new technologies that will bring effective changes in the education field. There will be considerable emphasis on vocational courses which will enhance a child’s ability & knowledge which will eventually broaden a pupil’s perspective.

With the availability of the latest & modern electronic gadgets, one will be able to bring in more productivity in the education technology sector. Ingenious invention of educational CDs & TV programs will help a student to understand key concepts & basics in a much more advanced manner. The concept of online classes is getting more acknowledgment than ever. With the improvement in internet speed & usage, more people are being drawn toward the limitless possibilities of online learning. In the future, we will see schools teaching students online with soft copies of books, which will lead to diminished use of stationery.
