Thinking about the Poem

I.

Que 1. Where does the traveler find himself? What problem does he face?

Answer-

In the yellow woods, the traveler finds himself at a point where two roads diverge.

The dilemma he faces is that he cannot travel both roads & has to choose between one of them.

Que 2. Discuss what these phrases mean to you.

  1. a yellow wood
  2. it was grassy & wanted wear
  3. the passing there
  4. leaves no step had trodden black
  5. how way leads on to way

Answer-

  1. “a yellow wood” – a forest during the autumn season.
  2. “it was grassy & wanted wear” – As the road has been less traveled, it was full of grass. The road is not yet worn out, as people have not traveled on it.
  3. “the passing there”people who walk on that road.
  4. “Leaves no step had trodden black”Under the feet of the travelers, the fallen leaves had not been crushed.
  5. “how way leads on to way”one road leads to another. So once the poet has made a choice between the two roads, he wonders whether he will be able to return to the same spot & choose the other road.

Que 3. Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describes them:

  1. in stanzas two and three?
  2. in the last two lines of the poem?

Answer-

  1. No, between the two roads, there is no difference. The poet while describing them in stanzas two & three, says “the passing there had worn them really about the same” & that “equally lay in leaves no step had trodden black…”
  2. In the poem, the poet in the last two lines tells us about the difference between the two roads as he says that taking the road less traveled, has made all the difference in his journey.

Que 4. What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean? (Looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it?)

Answer-

The poem’s last two lines, ”looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it” refers to taking a decision & accepting its consequences- be it good or bad.

Choosing the road that was less traveled, indicates how he took a decision that people would not have taken generally.

In the last line of the poem, he says that choosing the road less traveled has made all the difference in his journey. He does not seem to regret his choice.

II.

Que 1. Have you ever had to make a difficult choice (or do you think you will have difficult choices to make)? How will you make the choice (for what reasons)?

Answer-

On a daily basis, we all have to make choices. But to date, I have not made a difficult choice.

In the years coming up, I will have to face challenges for which I will have to make difficult choices. For instance, when I have to choose a profession, see my area of interest, etc.

I think when such a situation arises, I will not follow the herd mentality. Just like the poet, I will think it through & if required, I will take up the challenging & unexplored path.

Que 2. After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality?

Answer-

Before taking any decision, we should take time & think about the consequences. We should follow our hearts & not go by what other people say. Regretting or procrastinating about what might have happened doesn’t help.

Such thoughts will always keep us reminded of the past and never let us see the benefits of the choices we made. In order to overcome any situation, we need to graciously accept the reality.
