Thinking about the Poem

I.

1. Which country or countries do you think “the Northland” refers to?

Answer-

Any extremely cold country located in the north polar region of the Earth is called ”The Northland. “

2. What did Saint Peter ask the old lady for? What was the lady’s reaction?

Answer-

Saint Peter asked the old lady to serve him one of her baked cakes. The lady tried baking a small cake for the saint. But as the cake was baking, she noticed it seemed too big to give away, so she started to knead a smaller dough. She found this one also as big as the first, so she took a really tiny piece of dough & rolled it as thin as a wafer. But she couldn’t part with this as well & put it on the shelf. Thus, at last, she ended up giving nothing to Saint Peter.

3. How did he punish her?

Answer-

When the saint was presented with a small cake, he got angry. The lady was punished as she was changed into a woodpecker that built a nest “as birds do” & gathered scanty food by boring in the “hard, dry wood” all day long.

4. How does the woodpecker get her food?

Answer-

By boring holes into hard & dry woods of trees, the woodpecker gets its food.

5. Do you think that the old lady would have been so ungenerous if she had known who Saint Peter really was? What would she have done then?

Answer-

No, the old lady would not have been so ungenerous had she known who Saint Peter really was. Instead, she would have welcomed him in her house happily, giving him several large cakes in order to please him & seek his blessings.

6. Is this a true story? Which part of this poem do you feel is the most important?

Answer-

The poem is a legend & not a true story. The part where the saint changes the lady into a woodpecker is important as it teaches us the value of generosity, being caring & charitable. We should never judge a person based on their looks & try to give as much as possible.

7. What is a legend? Why is this poem called a legend?

Answer-

A ‘legend’ is a tale that’s carried down from one generation to another. There are no scientific explanations for the tales as they are mythological. It gives us a message or a moral. The poet starts by saying that he doesn’t believe in the tale but finds the message enriching. This legend teaches us about being generous towards other fellow beings.

Once Narcissus, a young gentleman with golden locks, saw her while he was searching for his friends in the forest. While following the voice, instead of his friends he saw Echo & quickly walked away.
