After the dissolution of the Bombay State on May 1, 1960, Maharashtra was established as an independent state. After this, Yashwantrao Chavan became the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He also served as the third chief minister of Bombay from 1956 to 1960. Maharashtra is the third largest state in India with an area of 307,713 sq. km.
Along with this, Maharashtra is the richest state in India. There are 288 assembly seats and 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. Currently, Eknath Shinde from the Shiv Sena party is the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Yashwantrao Chavan was the first chief minister of Maharashtra. Yashwantrao Chavan born on March 12, 1913 Â in the village of Devrashtre in Maharashtra. He was appointed as first cm of Maharashtra on 1st May 1960. He served as Maharashtra CM position for the tenure 1st May 1960 to 20th November 1962. During his tenure as a CM, Maharashtra witnessed industrial, educational and agriculture developement.
He also contributed to Indian independence movement as an active participant in cooperative movements. For his work as first cm of Maharashtra, Yashwantrao Chavan is known as Architect of Modern Maharashtra.
