Getting admission at IIT Roorkee has always been one of the biggest achievements of my life. The thing that makes IITs special is the kind of students that come there. I joined IIT Roorkee as an M. Tech computer science student. I stayed at Cautley Bhawan. Cautley and Ganga hostels are just opposite of each other and are somewhere in the corner of the campus. Mainly these Bhawans are far from the main academic building. We did not have a choice to pick a hostel, it was just assigned to us.

The first semester was spent in a shared room. From the second semester onward, we were provided individual rooms. There were a few interesting things.

  • No powered vehicle allowed. We all used to use cycles to go the academic block. And the elevated paths used to help us in daily exercise 🙂
  • The area around the main building is super well maintained and gives a very special feeling when you go there in the evening hours.
  • The Roorkee city is relatively small, there are no shopping malls etc, but it is a clean place. The main market is just outside the campus and there are a lot of food options.
  • There is river Ganga at one end of the city. Going there is always very refreshing.
  • It was a great feeling from day 1 and the feeling became better and better with time, seeing seniors getting placed in all top companies and some of them establishing their own startups.
  • Did not find professors very special as most of them were very old. Some young profs were really great.
  • Did not feel much academic pressure as the people who were teaching were also setting up the question papers.
  • Everyone in computer science got a very well paying job, even the people who were copy pasting all the coding assignments, they did not get the top product based company job, but got a decent paying job. This is the advantage of being at IIT.

Overall an unforgettable time and fully enjoyed it.
