How to Use AirDrop to Share Photos and Videos on iOS 17 With Just a Tap

Apple recently launched its new iOS 17 to its latest iPhone models, and it comes with several latest features and modifications to its operating system software.

The Airdrop feature in iOS 17 will help users quickly and seamlessly share files between Apple devices. By placing your iPhones close enough, you can share files and start Share Play sessions. It includes improved proximity sharing, easier content exchange, and friendlier interactions.

This feature used to be used on Macs, but iOS devices have different technologies, so it has been rarely used. But with the new iOS 17, AirDrop is now able to transfer files in the Apple ecosystem using its new features.

Airdrop is a feature that allows you to share files between iPhone and Mac devices. It’s very simple to share files with the Airdrop; user needs to turn on their AirDrop mode on the devices and further select the file that they want to share. The two iOS devices can be easily connected using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and do not require any internet connection.

This app is available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac and uses encryption to ensure your files are sent securely. It can send photos, videos, contacts, and documents, among other file types.

AirDrop Proximity Sharing can be enabled or turned on or off on an iPhone.

While AirDrop requires some manual steps and requires someone to be in the same room, proximity sharing simplifies file transfers between two devices. AirDrop must first be activated if you haven’t used it before. If you find proximity sharing offensive, turn it off. It is how iOS 17 is utilized.

Step 1- Open the Settings app.

Browse through the settings application on your iPhone.

Step 2- Tap through to General -> AirDrop.

Scroll down to the “General” option and select “AirDrop” option.

Step 3- Toggle the switch next to Bringing Devices Together on or off.

To enable or disable AirDrop proximity sharing on a Mac, you can:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General > AirDrop.
  3. Toggle the switch next to “Bringing Devices Together” on or off.

You can also turn AirDrop on or off by:

  1. In the menu bar, click Control Centre.
  2. Clicking the AirDrop icon.

Contacts Only or Everyone?

There are controls that Apple created so you can restrict who can send you things via AirDrop. You can choose between “Contacts Only” and “Everyone.”

How to accept an AirDrop

Step 1- AirDrop Alert

You will receive an alert on your smartphone if someone shares something with you via AirDrop.

Step 2- Accept or Decline

You need to “Accept” the request from the “Sender” in order to receive the file or “Decline” if not.

Step 3- App Content Delivery:

By clicking “Accept,” the AirDrop files will go into the same app from which they were received. Photos, for example, will go into Photos. Websites will open in Safari. App links will go to the App Store.

There will never be an Accept or Decline button when you use AirDrop, so if you transfer something from your iPhone to your Mac, it will just be delivered to you automatically. Make sure you log into your iPhone and Mac with the same Apple ID to ensure a smooth transfer.

Note:
If you can’t change Receiving Off:

  1. Select Screen Time from the Settings menu.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Tap Allowed Apps and make sure AirDrop is turned on.

Airdrop from iPhone to Mac

When it comes to transferring data, being able to send photos from your iPhone to your Mac is crucial. Utilizing Airdrop for transferring files from your iPhone to your Mac offers advantages. One advantage is that you don’t have to sign into the iCloud account on both devices. It means you no longer have to permit each transfer.

Step 1: Set Up Airdrop on Your Mac

Ensure that Airdrop is correctly configured on your Mac.

Step 2: Access Airdrop on Mac

On your Mac, open Finder and click on the Airdrop option located in the sidebar.

You can directly locate the Airdrop through the Finder Window or using the “Go.”

Step 3: Get ready with your iPhone

On your iPhone, navigate to your Photos app and select the album containing the images you wish to transfer.

Step 4: Initiate Sharing

Return to your Mac and ensure that the “Allow me to be discovered by” option is set to “Everyone” or “Contacts Only” as per your preference. Keep this Finder window open, as it is necessary for Airdrop.

Step 5: Share from iPhone

On your iPhone, tap the share button, typically located at the bottom of your screen. Select the “Airdrop” option from “Sharing.”

Step 6: Select Your Mac device

From the list that appears on your iPhone, choose your Mac’s name. Airdrop will initiate the transfer of photos from your iPhone to your Mac.

Step 7: Monitor Transfer

The file transfer will continue. Be patient while your iPhone and Mac connect. Keep iPhone Airdrop on. Macs will sound a notification and store files in your downloads folder after the transfer.

Step 3- Choose AirDrop from the sharing options listed.

Step 4- Choose a recipient from the AirDrop sheet.

Open AirDrop, then drag files to the recipient:

  1. A Finder window can be opened by selecting AirDrop in the sidebar or by selecting Go > AirDrop from the menu bar.
  2. Click the AirDrop icon to find nearby AirDrop users. Drag files, photos, or documents to the recipient.

Troubleshooting AirDrop issues

AirDrop works well. Consider the following if it’s not operating properly.

1. Both devices must be closed and have AirDrop enabled. You can’t AirDrop to another city. That doesn’t work. They must be 50 feet away.

2. On most devices, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled by default, but if you’re not able to find the person you want to send files to, make sure they’re enabled.

3. Transferring large files like video takes longer. Try not to interrupt the transfer; otherwise, AirDrop will fail.

4. Sharing or receiving AirDrop files requires you to turn off your hotspot.

If you can’t see the other device in AirDrop

Step 1- Check Connectivity and Proximity

Place devices within 9 meters (30 ft). Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.

Step 2- Launch AirDrop

Run the “Mac Finder” program. Next, in the menu bar, choose “Go> Airdop” from the dropdown bar. You can easily customize your preferences from the AirDrop window.

Step 3- Settings for AirDrop

AirDrop has a feature named “Allow me to be discovered by.” Allow others to find your device by checking this box. An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has a comparable setting in its settings.

Step 4- Visit iCloud Settings (if “Contacts Only”)

If AirDrop is set to “Contacts Only,” sign in both devices to iCloud. The receiving device’s Contacts app must also contain the sender’s Apple ID email or phone number. It is essential for smooth AirDrop transfers with “Contacts Only.”

Install the latest software updates for your Mac and other devices.

A point to keep in mind is:

  • Ensure that all the incoming connections are unblocked in firewall settings.
  • Turn off “Block all incoming connections” in MacOS Ventura or later. Select the Apple menu and then System Settings. Further, go to Network in the sidebar.
  • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then select Security & Privacy. Click the Firewall tab, click the lock, and enter your administrator password when prompted. Click Firewall Options, then uncheck “Block all incoming connections.”
