I recently had the opportunity to go through the interview process with HCL Technologies for the role of Graduate Engineer Trainee. Despite initially not qualifying for the test, I reached out to the company, and they kindly granted me a second chance. Through determination and preparation, I managed to progress through the subsequent rounds, including the technical and HR interviews, and ultimately secured the position.

How I Applied:

In today’s digital age, social media platforms have become valuable tools for exploring career opportunities. Recently, I stumbled upon HCL Technologies through social media. After a few days, I received an email from HCL Technologies, acknowledging my application and kindly requesting the completion of an application form. The email contained instructions and guidelines on how to accurately fill out the form to ensure a comprehensive and detailed representation of my qualifications.

Structure and format of the examination:

  1. Online test(MCQ):
  2. Technical round(online-zoom)
  3. HR round(online-zoom

Online Test:

This online test covers various technological domains. It tested my knowledge of operating systems, database management systems, computer networks, and 2 Coding Questions. Despite immediately falling short, I reached out to the recruitment team, expressing my passion for the position and desire for a second chance to prove that I’m worthy. To my delight, they agreed and gave me another opportunity to prove myself. I spent a significant amount of time researching HCL Technologies prior to the test. I got to know their services, values, and recent projects. In addition, I looked at common interview questions and practiced my responses so as to effectively showcase my skills and knowledge.

Technical round:

I passed the technical round with determination and thorough preparation. This round’s questions investigated deeply into coding concepts and problem-solving techniques. With some basic questions related to OOPS, OS, MySQL, and DBMS. I successfully completed two coding tasks, one involving dynamic programming and the other involving data structures and algorithms, and lasted for 40 minutes. I demonstrated my abilities by presenting an optimal solution for dynamic programming and I was able to implement it in Python yet I could not implement the code for the DSA question instead I came up with logic and clearly explained my approach, the interviewer seemed impressed, and I received positive feedback on my performance. I was asked the basic questions related to OOPS, OS, MySQL, and DBMS were:

  1. what is abstraction and how can we achieve it
  2. what is encapsulation the difference between the both?
  3. what is SQL and how is it different from MySQL?
  4. what are constraints and types of constraints in SQL?
  5. What are joins where do we use them?
  6. ACID properties.
  7. What is a thread?
  8. Deadlocks and real-life examples and how you avoid the deadlock situation(Banker’s Algorithm).
  9. Fragmentation and types of fragmentation.
  10. Semaphore.

HR round:

After clearing the technical round, I proceeded to the HR interview. This round aimed to assess my communication skills, adaptability, and cultural fit within the company. The HR representative was friendly and professional, creating a comfortable environment for discussion. In this round, I was asked these questions:

  1. Tell me about the
  2. projects that are mentioned in your resume.
  3. Something about you that is not mentioned in your resume.
  4. what would you leave behind, if you have to start a new life?
  5. Your strength and weaknesses.
  6. Your Inspiration.
  7. How do you handle the pressure?
  8. Will you accept your failure and how do you overcome your failure?
  9. Do you think we would offer you this job.
  10. How much would you rate yourself in communication skills?
  11. Give me three reasons why we should go with your candidature.

Finally, the HR representative informed me of some exciting news. They informed me that HCL Technologies would like to make me an offer for the position for which I had applied. This was a pleasant surprise because it showed that the company saw my potential and fit for the role. I was happy to receive the offer during the HR round because it saved me time and validated my qualifications and performance throughout the interview process.
