Difference Between Equinox And Solstice: We all agree with the fact that Earth revolves around the Sun, but are you also curious about how that affects us? The speed with which the earth revolves, inclination on the axis, or the distance from the sun, every small thing affects the earth. When the days or nights are long, it is known as solstice while when days and nights are equal it is known as Equinox. Types of Equinox 

On Earth, there are two Equinox every year(one around March 21, and one around September 22). Please note that Equinox is a moment when solar declination is 0°, not a whole season.

1. March Equinox (Spring Equinox)

The March Equinox, also known as the Spring Equinox or Vernal Equinox, marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall in the Southern Hemisphere. It is considered a beautiful time of renewal. In many cultures, around this time they mark the start of the year. Other than new year celebrations, it also marks very important days like easter all over the world. 

2. September Equinox

The September Equinox, also known as the Autumnal Equinox, marks the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. It occurs around September 22nd or 23rd every year. It is a time of transition , a symbol of balance and harmony . It is celebrated as harvest season, as crops are gathered and preparations are made for the coming winter months. 

What is Solstice?

In Solstice, either day or night will be longest. A solstice refers to two moments in the year when the Earth’s axis is tilted at its maximum angle towards or away from the sun.  

Types of Solstice

There are two types of solstices: Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice.

1. Summer solstice

The day is at its longest and the night is at its shortest. The Summer Solstice occurs around June 20th or 21st in the Northern Hemisphere and marks the longest day of the year.

2. Winter solstice

The day is at its shortest and the night is at its longest. The Winter Solstice occurs around December 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere and marks the shortest day of the year.

One equinox occurs around September (22-23) and the other around march (20-21).  On the other hand, Solstice occurs when either day or night is long. This also happens twice a year, One Solstice around December 21-22 and once on June 20-22. 

Equinox is actually a time when the Earth’s axis is not tilted, neither towards sun nor away from sun. This perpendicular behavior of Earth’s axis results into equal length of day and night.
