Subscriber Identity Module or SIM cards were commercially available in 1991 by a company called Giesecke & Devrient. They are used to store personal information and details of a subscriber, that are used to connect to the service. The SIM Card can be transferred to different devices as long as the device supports the specific Subscriber Identity Module card. They are available in various formats such as 32K, 64K, 128K and 256K.

The ‘K’ represents the kilobyte of memory available in the particular SIM card for storage. As the numbers increase, the memory space has also increased and better internet connectivity technology is adapted. The latest versions such as the 128K and 256K have additional functionality of tracking the mobile phones when lost.
