Hello Geeks,

Do you also have a knack for writing and documenting things? Do you also want to become financially stable since your freshman year and pay your bills? But, don’t know how to get started? Well, in this work experience of mine, I’ve shared a lot about how you can utilize your passion for writing into something you can be proud of!

Since my school days, I’ve been a crazy Grammar Nazi and a pen-passionate person. I loved to write, be it my thoughts, school work, or normal documentation of some research I do. When I got admission into college in July 2020, I thought that my focus would shift solely to technical subjects, I soon realized that my love for writing could not be suppressed. Even though I was in a technical field, I yearned to continue honing my content writing skills.

But, later in my freshman year, I thought I can work simultaneously in both domains. I could keep programming and expanding my knowledge base, whilst writing about that stuff for people to read about.

Recognition & Validation

So, I researched about this and found that Content Writing Internships are quite common these days and startups pay good money even to the students for their blogs. I learned time management and how to prioritize my tasks since both technical and writing were important to me. Determined to rekindle my content writing aspirations, I began applying for internships in this domain.

Overcoming Challenges

Since I was not from the field of writing, journalism, and English, many companies refused to offer me even an unpaid internship. Despite facing multiple rejections, my perseverance paid off, and I secured an internship as a content writing intern in August 2021 at ‘The Socians‘. This opportunity not only allowed me to gain valuable experience but also provided me with a sense of accomplishment as I received my first payment for my work.

Gaining Professional Experience

Later in my sophomore year, my talent and dedication as a content writer led me to be selected as a Solution Creator for a startup. In this role, I contributed by crafting engaging and informative content for the company, showcasing my ability to communicate effectively and deliver value through my writing.

In May 2022, I was appointed as the Content Lead for a construction startup called ‘Your Safety Hub.’ As the Content Lead, I managed their blog page and wrote over 40 promotional blogs for their website. Additionally, I took on the responsibility of proofreading these blogs, ensuring high-quality content for their audience. I interned there for 2 months and even received a bonus due to my exemplary performance.

Skill Development & Building a Portfolio

After that, I researched how I could make use of my technical skills in the field of writing. Recognizing the intersection of my technical knowledge and writing skills, I applied for the position of Technical Content Writer at an educational firm called ‘FavTutor.’ I successfully secured the role and spent three months working with them, writing over 25 technical blogs focused on topics like Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA). Through my efforts, I significantly improved their Google page ranking. By the way, you can head over there to read my blogs.

Networking & Collaboration

After working there for about 3 months, I worked on my technical skills for 2 months. After that, I thought of working again with a company in a more technical manner. So, I made the use of LinkedIn for this. I decided to reach out to the founder of a startup ‘Thinklayer Minds Pvt. Ltd.’ to explore a role. Thanks to my previous experiences and expertise, I was selected for the position of Technical Writer. Currently, I am engaged in documenting their WordPress plugins and maintaining their blog webpage. I have already authored 20+ blogs covering topics such as DevOps, WordPress, and other technical subjects. Also, remote internships are extremely well paid as opposed to the regular ones and the work culture is amazing.

By embracing recognition, persevering through challenges, gaining professional experiences, building a dynamic portfolio, pursuing continuous learning, and nurturing relationships, beginners can find their unique path to writing success. So, take these milestones as guideposts, forge ahead with passion, and let your writing prowess shape a remarkable journey of your own. Remember, every word you write has the power to inspire, inform, and captivate—so unleash your creativity and let your writing dreams take flight!
