Tata Steel offered four branch-specific managerial roles for electrical, mechanical, production, and metallurgy. The selection process comprised two tests and a final interview.

About Me – Tier1 IIT (Top 7), non-circuital

Test 1(Technical test)

The first test was a comprehensive examination with six sections. Three sections were dedicated to domain-specific multiple-choice questions (MCQs), while the remaining focused on aptitude. Over 100 students were shortlisted for this test, and half of them advanced to the next stage.

Test 2(Cultural Test)

The cultural test resembled general assessments conducted by other companies such as HSBC and Barclays. Again, only half of the participants proceeded to the branch-specific interviews.

Interview

The interview, conducted via Google Meet, featured a panel of three individuals – one from Human Resources (H1) and two technical experts (I1 and I2). The interview lasted half an hour for all candidates.

H1- Initiated with a request for a brief introduction and inquired about my schooling and city.

I1- Asked about Tata Steel and its business.

I2- Draw Iron carbon diagram and explain all invariant reactions.

I2- Explain Ellingham diagram and its applications in the steel industry.

I have done two projects in core field.

I1 – He asked me to explain one of the projects. And then asked materials related questions, like- how do you think of this material, what test you have done, etc. It was a good discussion.

I2- Different lattice and slip systems related questions (like, give example of HCP metal, difference in slip system of BCC and FCC, etc.)

H1 (Closing): Concluded with some basic HR questions.

Verdict: SELECTED

Tata Steel chose two candidates for each profile. For future candidates, I recommend preparing the basics of their respective branches, with a special emphasis on ferrous metallurgy for those in the metallurgy field.

Overall, the experience was enriching, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead with Tata Steel.
