Speed, distance, and time are the three most important variables in physics. Furthermore, these three variables undoubtedly aid in the solution of a variety of physics problems. Speed, distance, and time have a unique formula combined. The formula is used for the objects in uniform motion with 0 acceleration. Let’s look at their meanings.

Distance, Speed and Time formula

Before understanding the formula, it is first important to know the definitions of the terms. Let’s take a look at the definitions of distance, speed, and time,

  • Distance: The amount of space that exists between any two points is referred to as distance. It can also be defined as the amount of movement of something. Furthermore, distance is measured in units such as miles, kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters, yards, and inches. Furthermore, the distance that something travels is related to the change in position.
  • Speed: It refers to the rate at which an object moves from one location to another. The magnitude of an object’s velocity is referred to as its speed. It is unquestionably a scalar quantity.
  • Time: The advancement of incidents is referred to as time. This progression is made in such a way that it moves from the perspective of history and then into the future. As a result, if there is indeed a system that is constantly shifting in nature, it is timeless. Furthermore, time is something that cannot be seen, touched, or tasted. Its passage can only be measured. Time, according to scientists, is the fourth dimension of reality. Time is used by physicists to describe events in three-dimensional space.

Formula

The distance speed time formula is given as follows:

s = d/t

Where,

  • s denotes the speed of an object
  • d denotes the distance travelled by the object
  • t denotes the time taken by the object to cover the said distance at the said speed

Sample Problems

Question 1: Calculate the distance traveled by truck with a speed of 6 km/hr in 1 hour.

Solution:

Given: s = 6 km/hr. , t = 1 hour

The distance speed time formula states that: s = d/t

⇒ d = s × t

= 6 km/hr × 1 hr.

= 6 km

Question 2: A car has covered 90 km in 2 hours. What is its speed?

Solution:

Given: d = 90 km , t = 2 hours

The distance speed time formula states that: s = d/t

= 90 km/ 2 hours

= 45 km/hr

Question 3: Find the time taken by a cyclist to cover 4 km at a speed of 10 km/hr.

Solution:

Given: d = 4 km, s = 10 km/hr.

The distance speed time formula states that: s = d/t

⇒ t = d/s

= 4 km/ 10 km/hr

= 0.4 

Question 4: Calculate the distance traveled by truck with a speed of 3 km/hr in 8 hours.

Solution:

Given: s = 3 km/hr. , t = 8 hour

The distance speed time formula states that: s = d/t

⇒ d = s × t

= 3 km/hr × 8 hr.

= 24 km

Question 5: Calculate the distance traveled by truck with a speed of 18 km/hr in 8 hours.

Solution:

Given: s = 18 km/hr, t = 8 hours

The distance speed time formula states that: s = d/t

⇒ d = s × t

= 18km/hr × 8 hr.

= 144 km

Question 6: Imagine the distance is doubled and the time is halved, what will be a new speed?

Solution:

Suppose, the speed was “s” earlier, time was “t” earlier, distance was “d”.

s = d/t ⇢ (1)

New distance = 2d

New time = t/2

New speed = s’ = 2d/(t/2)

s’ = 4d/t

s’ = 4s

The new speed will be 4 times the old speed.
