Answer-

Ancient trees were uprooted & crashed to the earth by the super cyclone. It swiftly washed away people & houses. As far as the eye could see, everywhere a raging, deadly, brown sheet of water covered, only in a few places some fractured cement houses stood. One could see bloated animal carcasses & human corpses floating all around. Even huge old trees had fallen.

Que 2. How has Prashant, a teenager, been able to help the people of his village?

Answer-

Prashant aged nineteen years old, decided to lead his village people. He organized the youths & elders in a group to pressure the merchant once again to part with his rice. This was a successful task. The survivors at the cyclone shelter were able to fill their bellies for the first time in four days.

Then he organized a team of youth volunteers & cleaned the shelter of filth, urine, vomit & floating carcasses & tended to the wounds & fractures of the people who were injured by the cyclone.

He brought the orphaned children together & put up a polythene sheet shelter for them.

Answer-

The people of the community helped one another by being under Prashant’s leadership. The merchant was convinced by them to help them with the available rice. In order to give a message to the passing helicopters that they were hungry, the youth task force made the children lie in the sand, left by the waters around the shelter with utensils on their stomachs. The message was received & they received food & other basic needs at regular intervals.

Women of Kalikuda were made to look after the orphaned children while food & materials for the shelter was secured by men. A food-for-work program was started by an NGO in which women were employed. 

Que 4. Why do Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows? What alternatives do they consider?

Answer-

The plan to set up institutions for orphans & widows was not favored by Prashant & the volunteers because they felt that children would grow up without love & widows would suffer from stigma & loneliness in such institutions.

Instead, they thought of resettling the orphans within their community itself, like in new foster families consisting of childless widows & children without adult care.

Que 5. Do you think Prashant is a good leader? Do you think young people can get together to help people during natural calamities?

Answer-

Yes, Prashant is indeed a great leader. Despite being grief-stricken, he decided to help his village people. He organized the youth & elders in a group to help others in their tough times. His initiatives made it possible for people to put their lives back on track.

Yes, I do think that young people when together can help people during natural calamities as they are more strong & energetic. They can come up with new & useful ideas which can reduce the devastating effects of calamities by being of help to more & more people.

We are a part of the community. Natural calamities may occur at any time. We have seen many such natural disasters causing devastation all around. The occurrence of such calamities is not under our control but we can prepare ourselves to face such devastation. If timely precautions are taken, there can be a reduction in the effects of such calamities. We should keep the following things in mind :
