Think About It

Que 1. What does the author notice one Sunday afternoon? What is his mother’s reaction? What does she do?

Answer-

The author smelled something strange, one Sunday afternoon. Through the ceiling’s seams, he saw smoke pouring in. The room was quickly filled with smoke. The author & his mother ran out of the house.

He rushed to the neighbors to call the fire department, but his mother immediately ran back into the house. Then, she came running out of the house, with a small metal box full of important documents. She dropped the case on the lawn & ran back into the house to bring the pictures of his dead father, which was the only thing that reminded her of him.

Que 2. Why does he break down in tears after the fire?

Answer-

When the fire was finally out after five hours, the author realized that his cat was nowhere to be found. He was moved to tears when he was reminded of the new school he had to join, the fire in his house & the thought of his cat, who might have died in the fire were significant losses.

Que 3. Why is the author deeply embarrassed the next day in school? Which words show his fear & insecurity?

Answer-

On the next day of his school, the author is embarrassed as his clothes were looking weird, he had no books or homework & his backpack was gone. He felt insecure & frustrated.

These words speak of his fear & insecurity: “I didn’t want to grow up, change or have to handle life if it was going to be this way. I just wanted to curl up & die.”

Que 4. The cat & the author are very fond of each other. How has this been shown in the story? Where was the cat after the fire? Who brings it back & how?

Answer-

The author & the cat’s bond can be seen in various instances in the story. For example, the author said, “She was never far from me. I had rescued her when she was a kitten & somehow she knew that I was the one responsible for giving her ‘the good life’.

On realizing that his cat was missing, the author says, “Then all at once it hit me— the new school, the fire, my cat— I broke down in tears & cried & cried. I was suffering loss, big time.”

The cat had been so scared by the fire that she ran over a mile away. The cat’s collar had our phone number written on it, but the author’s phone had been destroyed & disconnected. A stranger woman took her in & tried to find out whose cat it was. The author was given the cat by her.

Que 5. What actions of the schoolmates change the author’s understanding of life and people & comfort him emotionally? How does his loneliness vanish and how does he start participating in life?

Answer-

The author’s schoolmates were genuinely concerned about him. On his school’s second day, people insisted that he should immediately go to the gym. The author went to the gym & saw that a big table was set for him, with all kinds of stuff. They had collected school supplies, notebooks & all kinds of different clothes—jeans, tops, sweatsuits for him.

People who he had never spoken to, came up to him to introduce themselves. He was invited to their houses. These incidents changed the author’s understanding of life & people. This is how he finally made friends at school. That’s how his loneliness vanished & he started participating in life.

Que 6. What is the meaning of “My cat was back, and so was I”? Had the author gone anywhere? Why does he say that he is also back?

Answer-

The author says the above statement because finally everything was sorted in his life. No, he had not gone anywhere.

He had big losses. He missed having around his friends & teachers from the old school, his home was destroyed in the fire & his cat was also missing.

He finally had friends in the new school & saw his house getting rebuilt. A stranger woman gave him his cat back. He says, “My cat was back & so was I”. He means that now his life was complete again with- friends, a house & his cat. He finally got all his things back.

Talk About It

Que. Have any of your classmates/schoolmates had an experience like the one described in the story where they needed help? Describe how they were helped.

Answer-

Two years ago, my friend Arvind visited the grocery store to buy some household items. It was a crowded place & a nearby shop caught fire due to a short circuit. People panicked & rushed here & there. My friend too tried to leave that place. He along with three people got himself locked in a nearby shop to escape from the smoke. But within a short span of time, the shop was filled with smoke. They felt suffocated by the fumes. They thought this was their end. In the meantime, a team of firefighters broke open the shutter & took them out of the shop. They were taken to the hospital. I got my friend back because of the team of firefighters & due to God’s grace.
