How to Install MyPaint on Ubuntu

MyPaint is an open-source, quick, cost-free, and user-friendly painting program that is comparable to Corel Painter. This program is typically used by graphic designers or digital painters for various tasks. It works with OSs similar to Unix as well as Windows, macOS, and Mac OS X. To provide users with the greatest experience possible, MyPaint’s engineers are always trying to eliminate any fault or malfunction.

Features of MyPaint:

  • Layer management and symmetry modes are included in MyPaint’s straightforward interface.
  • It supports Python 3 and pressure-sensitive graphics tablets.
  • A dynamic brush library that may be integrated into several platforms is included.
  • The size of the picture need not be predetermined when using the Unlimited canvas in MyPaint. 

Installation of MyPaint on Ubuntu

The MyPaint application can be installed using 3 different methods:

  • Method 1: Installing MyPaint using Terminal
  • Method 2: Installing MyPaint using Flathub
  • Method 3: Installing MyPaint using AppImage

Let’s go through all the installation methods one by one.

Method 1: Installing MyPaint using Terminal

Step 1: Update the repositories using the following command.

sudo apt update -y

 

Step 2: Now, install the mypaint application using the apt manager

sudo apt-get install -y mypaint

 

Step 3: To launch the application, go to the Activities panel and search for MyPaint. Click on the application icon to open.

 

Step 4: MyPaint application is successfully opened and we can draw various exciting pictures into it.

 

Method 2: Installing MyPaint using Flathub

Step 1: Firstly, install the flatpak manager using the below command.

sudo apt install flatpak

 

Step 2: Now, execute the below command to install the MyPaint application using flatpak.

flatpak install flathub org.MyPaint.MyPaint

 

Step 3: To open the application, simply type the application name in the same terminal.

mypaint

 

Method 3: Installing MyPaint using AppImage

Step 1: Download MyPaint from the download page and then execute the below command in the terminal.

wget https://github.com/MyPaint/MyPaint/releases/download/v2.0.1/MyPaint-v2.0.1.AppImage

 

Step 2: Now, change the permissions of the AppImage file, so that it can be executed.

chmod 755 MyPaint-v2.0.1.AppImage

 

Step 3: Now, execute the below command to run or launch the application in Ubuntu.

./MyPaint-v2.0.1.AppImage

 

Step 4: The application is opened successfully and we can draw various designs into it.

 

Usage of MyPaint Application

Step 1: Create a new design by going to the File > New option.

 

Step 2: We have selected the circle shape, there are various other shapes that can be used for designing.

 

Step 3: There are various types of brushes supported by the application, we have selected the Deevad type.

 

Step 4: We have drawn a new circle using the newly selected brush.

 

Step 5: We can also select the line shape for creating a new line in the design.
