About GRSE: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers is a Miniratna Central Government Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), under the Ministry of Defence.

Application Process:

After applying online on the website, I couriered Xerox copies of documents – Adhar Card, mark sheets, etc., to their Delhi office by ordinary post, as instructed while applying. Then, admit card of the written test was released.

Round 1: Pen-and-paper-based MCQ exam

There were 10 questions on Quantitative Aptitude, 10 questions on Current Affairs and General Aptitude, and 80 questions on Computer Fundamentals, Computer Networking, Web Technologies (HTML-CSS-JavaScript-PHP), and a few full forms.

Suggestions: Think clearly and on your feet. The paper was very easy, but an easy paper means you can get very confident and make silly mistakes. Once you make a mistake (say mark option A instead of option B), there is nothing else you can do anymore even though you know what the correct answer is. This is because in the OMR sheet if you cross out one answer and mark the correct answer for the same question, it can be invalid. We have all become very accustomed to Computer Based Tests where we can immediately change answers, so it’s better to practice on sample OMR sheets during your exam preparation.

After shortlisting based on my score in Round 1, I was called for Round 2 to the GRSE office in Garden Reach, Kolkata.

Round 2: Document Verification & Trade (Practical) Test, Last Round

After reaching the office, all candidates were given tea and biscuits as refreshments. Then document verification started. I had to show my original Class – 10 and 12 board exam mark sheets, college graduation certificate, Adhar Card, etc., and submitted their xerox copies. Also filled up and submitted the bio data form. Some got rejected at this stage, and the rest of us were asked to have lunch and come for Trade Test.

After lunch, the Trade Test had 2 questions:

1) The computer given is fully disassembled. Set it up and solve the booting issue you see.

(For this question, each candidate was assigned a completely separate room)

2) Connect 2 given computers in a LAN connection using a hub given.

Besides the computer and devices, I was given an answer script to document all the steps I was taking to solve the issues, for both questions.

Suggestions: Have practical experience whenever possible of trying to fix hardware in your daily life. Whenever safely possible, connect your computer to other Internet connection modes besides WiFi and broadband, it helps a lot on the day of the trade test to quickly think and act. Some knowledge of tinkering helps.

Note: There was officially no interview, as per Central Govt guidelines. Unofficially, I had to give a telephonic interview with questions like, “Do you want to pursue higher education?”, “Why do you want to work in this company?”.

Verdict: Selected
