Eligibility Criteria of CGL

  1. Age Limit: The candidate appearing for this examination must be a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 32 years.
  2. Educational Qualification: The candidate should be at least a Bachelor’s Holder so that he can be eligible to give the SSC CGL exam.
  3. Nationality: The candidate should be an Indian Citizen. Proof should be submitted before appearing for the exam.
  4. Physical Standards: SSC CGL has some Physical Standards. For Male Candidates, the Height should be greater than 157.5 cm, and the Chest should be 81cm (fully expanded with a minimum expansion of 5 cm). For Female Candidates, Height should be greater than 152 cm, Weight should be a minimum of 48kgs.
  5. Number of Attempts: There is no restriction on the maximum number of attempts for the SSC CGL. It depends on the age group of the candidate. For example, If a candidate is trying to get a post of inspector and he has started appearing from age of 21 yrs, he can give the exams till he reaches the age of 30 years. So ultimately, the number of attempts gets restricted to 9. 
  6. Citizenship: The candidate must be a refugee from Tibet or a citizen of India, Nepal, or Bhutan.

CGL Exam Pattern & Selection Process

SSC CGL Exam is being conducted in 4 different Tiers that are discussed below: 

Tier 1: Computerized Exam

  • The exam has 100 objective questions.
  • The exam has a maximum score of 200.
  • The exam will last for 60 minutes.
  • Four sections are used to ask the questions: English comprehension, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Intelligence and Reasoning
  • For each incorrect response, 0.5 marks are deducted.

Tier 2: Computerized Exam

  • The test comprises four papers that are MCQ based.
  • 200 is the maximum mark for each paper.
  • Each exam paper has a 120-minute time limit.
  • Quantitative Abilities Paper 1 is in English Language and Comprehension, Paper 2 is in Statistics, Paper 3 is only for certain posts, and General Studies, and finally Paper 4 is in Finance and Economics (only for specific posts).
  • For Papers 1, 2, and 4, there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks, and for Paper 3, it is 0.50 marks.

Tier 3: Descriptive Exam with Pen and Paper

  • This subjective exam contains writing an essay or letter in either English or Hindi language.
  • 100 is the maximum mark for the test.
  • The exam will last for 60 minutes.

Tier 4: Data Entry Skill Test (DEST)/Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)

  • This tier is only for specific posts of SSC CGL.
  • The purpose of the exam is to test the candidate’s competency with computer applications and data entry speed.
