My AFCAT exam experience was a blend of familiarity and frustration. The questions in the exam seemed to draw heavily from the first-year aptitude part of engineering mathematics, making them relatively easy to comprehend. Despite this, the competition was fierce, and I fell short of the cutoff by a mere 30 marks. The realization that a few additional correct answers could have altered my fate was disheartening. Nevertheless, I believe that everyone with an aspiration for a career in the defense forces should attempt the AFCAT exam at least once. What truly sets this examination apart, however, is the subsequent SSB (Services Selection Board) process. This phase, occurring post-exam, proved to be the most challenging aspect of the selection process for aspiring officers in the defense forces. The SSB demands a holistic evaluation of a candidate, encompassing not just academic prowess but also qualities like leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, making it a formidable hurdle on the path to becoming an officer.
