The 92-year-old billionaire investor, Warren Buffett expresses his fear concerning the advancement of AI technology. Warren Buffett has compared the rise of AI to creation of atom bomb.

At the recent Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting in Omaha, Warren Buffett, the veteran investor, voiced his thoughts and concerns over the evolving AI technology. He drew parallels between Artificial intelligence and atom bombs and nuclear weapons and the significant damage that both can cause to human life.

Even though “Sage of Omaha”was impressed by the capabilities of the AI tech when his friend, Bill Gates, made try out the ChatGPT, he was also anxious and voiced his concerns regarding the potential risks of emerging AI technology.

Warren Buffett stated:

“It can do all kinds of things. And when something can do all kinds of things, I get a little bit worried. Because I know we won’t be able to un-invent it and, you know. We did invent, for a very, very good reason, the atom bomb in World War II; it was enormously important that we did so. But is it good for the next 200 years of the world that the ability to do so has been unleashed?”

Buffett has been very expressive about his fear of nuclear weapons and how he would contribute every penny to reduce the probability of attacks only if he knew the way out.

Throwing weightage on the same, Buffett subtly highlighted how AI technology is as scary as the atom bombs. How the rapid pace at which AI technology advances can be dangerous and pose a real threat to humans if got into the wrong hands or used in the wrong manner.

During an interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box, Warren Buffett revealed how the fears of another pandemic or nuclear war kept him awake at night. He used to get worried about these instead of worrying about Berkshire Hathaway’s future and success.

While citing a quote by Albert Einstein based upon atom bomb and how it changed everything, Buffett said:

“We didn’t have a choice, but when you start something, well, Einstein said after the atomic bomb, he said, this has changed everything in the world except how men think. And I would say the same thing, maybe not the same thing; I don’t mean that, but I mean with AI, it can change everything in the world except how men think and behave. And that’s a big step to take,”

The vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, Charlie Munger (99), also expressed his views during the annual meeting. He said, “I am personally sceptical of some of the hype that is going into artificial intelligence. I think old-fashioned intelligence works pretty well.”

After the “Father of AI,” Geoffrey Hinton, recently resigned due to the risks of AI and Elon Musk and thousands of researchers and tech experts signed an open letter for putting a hold on the development of other advanced AI systems, the statement by Warren Buffett have certainly risen the focus on how adversely AI can impact the future of human lives.
