Que 1. Why was Kezia afraid of her father?

Answer-

Kezia was afraid of her father because he spoke to her in a harsh manner & would always point out her mistakes. He would never play with her. Her father was very strict & commanding.

Que 2. Who were the people in Kezia’s family?

Answer-

Kezia’s family consisted of her grandmother, mother & father.

Que 3. What was Kezia’s father’s routine?

  2. after coming back from his office?
  3. on Sundays?

Answers-

  1. Before going to his office, Kezia’s father would come to her room & give her a goodbye kiss.
  2. After coming back from the office, Kezia’s father would order his tea to be brought to the drawing room & would ask Kezia’s mother, to get his newspapers & slippers. Then, he would order Kezia to take off his boots.
  3. On Sundays, with a handkerchief on his face, he would take a rest by stretching out on the sofa & putting his feet on one of the best cushions, sleep & snore. He would enjoy sound sleep on the sofa.

Que 4. In what ways did Kezia’s grandmother encourage her to get to know her father better?

Answer-

Kezia’s grandmother would encourage her to have a nice talk with her father by asking her to go down to the drawing room. This way she could know her father better. Besides, she asked Kezia to stitch a pin cushion out of a beautiful yellow silk piece & gift it to him as a birthday present.

Que 1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?

Answer-

Kezia was afraid of her father because he talked to her in a harsh manner. One day her grandmother advised her to make a pin cushion & gift him on his birthday. Kezia took this as an opportunity to please him.

Kezia decided to stitch three sides of the pin cushion. She did not know what to fill the cushion with. Her grandmother was not around. So, Kezia went to her parent’s room to ask her mother for some scrap but, she wasn’t there.

Kezia saw some sheets of paper on the bed table & he collected them. She tore them into small pieces & stuffed the cushion with those pieces.

But her efforts to please her father went in vain. At night her father was searching for those sheets of paper on the bed table, which had the speech for Port Authority. Her father scolded Kezia for touching things that did not belong to her & beat her with a ruler.

Que 2. Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers”. What kind of father was Mr. Macdonald, and how was he different from Kezia’s father?

Answer-

Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers”. Mr. Macdonald was a loving father who was very gentle, friendly & forgiving. He used to play & laugh with his children. He was quite different from her father who was very strict & unfriendly.

Que 3. How does Kezia begin to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy?

Answer-

One day, when her mother & grandmother were at the hospital, Kezia was left at home with their cook, Alice. She had a nightmare. She called for her grandmother while shivering with fear. Kezia saw her father near her bed. Her father took her in his arms & carefully tucked her on his bed. & slept beside her. Half-asleep, she went closer to him, snuggled her head under his arm & held onto his shirt tightly.

Now she felt comfortable. Her father told her to rub her feet against his legs and get them warm. She saw her father go off to sleep before her.

Kezia now realized that her father was not as harsh as she had earlier thought. Her father had to work all day long which made him so tired that he could not play with her. At the bottom, her father was a very good person.

I. Look at the following sentence.

Here, glad means happy about something. Glad, happy, pleased, delighted, thrilled, and overjoyed are synonyms (words or expressions that have the same or nearly the same meaning.) However, they express happiness in certain ways.

II. Verbs of Reporting

Study the following sentences.

The italicized words are verbs of reporting. We quote or report what someone has said or thought by using a reporting verb. Every reporting clause contains a reporting verb. For example:

  • “How are you doing?” Seema asked. We use verbs of reporting to advise, order, report statements, thoughts, intentions, questions, requests, apologies, manner of speaking, and so on.

Form pairs or groups and discuss the following questions:

Que 1. This story is not an Indian story. But do you think there are fathers, mothers & grandmothers like the ones portrayed in the story in our own country?

Answer-

Yes, in our country, we do see fathers, mothers & grandmothers like the ones portrayed in the story. Parents try to discipline their children, often forgetting that their children need their love & care too. What they forget is that a child has yet to learn & accept their environment. Giving the kid time, and being compassionate & caring is important so that the kid grows up having a good bond with their parents. Punishing & being extremely strict, only makes children distant from their parents.

Question 2: Was Kezia’s father right to punish her? What kind of a person was he?

Answer-

 It was not right for Kezia’s father to punish her. He should have understood that Kezia is just a child & children tend to make mistakes. He could have explained to her the importance of those papers & that she should never repeat this mistake.

Her father was strict, undemonstrative, unkind & short-tempered. But, he was also very hard-working & responsible. As he worked hard, he got tired. So, he could not give any time to Kezia. But he loved her very much.

We see that he has a loving & affectionate heart but he lets his disciplinarian behavior get the better of him. He does unkind actions like beating her with a ruler, but then we also see how caring he is as a father who pacifies Kezia when she wakes up from a bad dream.

Writing

Has your life been different from or similar to that of Kezia when you were a child? Has your perception of your parents changed now? Do you find any change in your parent’s behavior vis-à-vis yours? Who has become more understanding? What steps would you like to take to build a relationship based on understanding? Answer-

My childhood is quite similar to Kezia’s. Even though my parents never physically punished me. I struggled to accept who I was. I was always pushed to work hard, be good academically & become an all-rounder. However, my hard work was never appreciated by them, and despite all my efforts, I couldn’t get a rank in class or in a competition. This strained our relationship as there was constant pressure for me to excel every time.

Well, gradually over the years I can say I have found them to accept the way I am. Our communication & understanding of each other’s likes & dislikes has improved.

Proper communication & understanding are a must to build a relationship. One should never try to change the other person based on what they think the other person should be like. This is not healthy & we are unable to accept an individual’s true self. We should accept people the way they are & do let them know if there is something that bothers us about them.
