A theme in a Linux operating system is a group of coordinated settings that specifies the visual appearance of a part of the GNOME Desktop. A theme contains settings that affect different parts of the GNOME Desktop, such as controls, window frames, and Icons. In this article, you will learn how to install themes on your Linux Operating system.  For demonstration, the Kali Linux variant of the Debian distribution would be used. But similar methods could be employed to produce such effects in other variants as well. Themes are installed into the Linux Operating system by using the Gnome Tweak Tool. This tool comes built-in in certain distributions of Linux but needs to be installed in others. The process of installing a theme is divided into three parts:

  1. Downloading the Gnome Tweaks Tool
  2. Installing the Gnome Tweaks Tool
  3. Using the tool to change the theme

Downloading Gnome Tweaks Tool:

Gnome tweaks could be downloaded in different ways such as:

  2. Downloading the package of Gnome Tweaks manually from the web browser.
  3. Downloading the package of Gnome Tweaks from the command line (terminal).
  4. This article utilizes the third way of downloading Gnome Tweaks. For downloading gnome tweaks on Kali Linux, run the following command in the terminal:
echo “deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling
main non-free contrib” | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list
Kali Linux Terminal

  • The above command adds entries in the sources. List files for the address where the gnome tweak tools package could be found.

Gnome Tweaks could be downloaded by running the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get update
Kali Linux Terminal

This command downloads all the packages listed in the sources. List file.

Installing the Gnome Tweaks Tool:

Step 2: Now gnome tweaks application has been successfully installed in the Linux Operating system.

Step 3: While running the above command a lot of processes need to be restarted, therefore if prompted for such press Y.

Step 4: Now the operating system needs to be restarted before the application could be used. Therefore, restart the operating system after the previous step.

Step 5: Enter the following command in the terminal:

gnome-tweaks
Kali Linux Terminal

Step 6: A new window similar to this would have appeared:

Kali Linux Settings
