If we are talking about cloud technologies or cloud providers, then there is a common name, which is Google Cloud Platform. Google Cloud Platform, or GCP, provides various cloud services and computing resources to its users to host applications on the cloud or use databases, and storage on the cloud. To use Google Cloud services, we need a GCP project, which is like a container to hold all the required services and their respective billing. To give all its users a seamless experience, Google Cloud Platform has certain restrictions or limits when it comes to various services. There is also a limit on the creation of projects in GCP. In this article, we will learn about the Project limits set on Projects in GCP.

What is Google Cloud Platform (GCP)?

Google Cloud Platform, or GCP, is a market leader in providing cloud computing solutions to organizations and developers. GCP provides solutions for computing, storage, databases, big data, machine learning, and more. Cloud services and resources are also available through APIs provided by GCP to use with external applications. Google Cloud Services are also used by Google itself for its internal and end-user applications like Gmail, Drive, etc. Google Cloud Platform’s services are paid but follow a pay-as-you-go model for billing, and there are services available to use in the Google Cloud free tier. New users can also go for a free trial membership to use the services provided by the Google Cloud Platform.

What is a GCP Project?

A GCP project is like a container that holds up all the necessary resources, services, and configurations for a work. Users or organizations can create GCP projects to use cloud services provided by the Google Cloud Platform. Organizations can add people to collaborate and work on a cloud project together. A GCP project can be created and deleted by its owner. These projects are billed in a per-user manner. It’s better to delete the project after its purpose has been served to free up resources and save on billing. However, the Google Cloud Platform has imposed certain restrictions or limits on project creation to maintain system stability and offer a seamless experience to all its users.

What is the GCP Project Limit?

There are certain restrictions when it comes to project creation on the Google Cloud Platform. In GCP, the number of projects that can be created is limited for it’s users and Organizations. If a user creates a project on his own, outside an organization, then the project quota for the user is utilized. If someone creates a Project within an organization, then there needs to be a valid quota remaining for either the organization or the user.

Steps to Check GCP Project Limit

To check the number of Project Limits available for a user you can follow the steps given.

Step 1: Login to the GCP Console

Open Google Cloud Console by visiting console.cloud.google.com on your web browser and log in with valid credentials i.e. Google account with a valid subscription. GCP free trial accounts also can be used.

Choose the google account

Step 2: Select Project

Once you are logged in you can see a interface similar to the following,

Select the project

As we don’t have any active Project in this Cloud Console we are getting an option to select a Project. For your case, Your current active project name can be displayed on the top left in place of Select a Project. Click on it and this will show all GCP Projects associated with your Google Account.

Step 3: Try to create a new Project

In the page, along with all associated projects, we also get a option to create a New Project. Click on New Project.

Sekect the Project

Step 4: Check available Limit

Once you click on New Project, we will get a option to create a new Project by providing Project Name and other details for Organizations. In the same screen on the top of these you get to see the Remaining Project Quota for the Google Account if you have Project remaining less than 30.

New Project

As you can see for this Google Cloud Platform account we are left with 23 numbers of Project to be created. Now if you want to create the project, you can click on Create after filling the details asked. Otherwise Click on Cancel.

Step 5: Increase Project Limit

On the same page where you get the alert for remaining projects, you also get a Link to increase the remaining Project Quota. Click on Manage Quota and you will be redirected to a new page of Google Developers Help. Here you get a form to be filled up for requesting to increase the Project limit.

form-gcp

Fill the form with all required information and click on submit. The demand to increase project limit quota will be review by the Google Cloud Team and as per their decision the limit will be increased.

Folder Limit in GCP Project

In a GCP Project either in Organization or in case for stand alone users, we can choose to create folders inside a GCP project. These Folder are beneficial while maintain a hierarchy in a project or create a hierarchy with level of access for an Organization. Projects also can be used for better billing where it becomes easier to track the resources used and cost allocations. However like GCP Projects there is limit for GCP Project Folders.

  • Folders can be nested in a GCP Project with depth less than or equal to 10 levels.
  • For a parent folder, it can have child folders less than 300. However it is only applicable for direct child only and doesn’t take hierarchy in count. Child folders can have more folder or Project associated with them.

Conclusion

In Google Cloud Platform, creating Projects are necessary to use services provided by GCP. We have the privilege to create and delete projects as owner. However it is important to keep in mind that we cannot create unlimited projects and there are certain restriction and limitation for Projects Quota. This includes, Creation of Project, Folder Structure, Tags and even requests made under a Project. We can fill up Mange Quota form to request for increasing Project limit but this is a subject to consideration of Google’s internal team as per the details provided by a user.
