Hi everyone,

In this article, I’ll be telling about my interview experience with Finastra for the role of Associate Technical Writer Intern position. I have an experience of working as a Technical Writer for more than a year and being in my final year of college, I was looking for some full time opportunities with a good company for the role. I got to know about this hiring through LinkedIn and promptly applied for the same.

Since I already had some experience in the domain, my resume was shortlisted for the next round.

About the Company

Finastra is one of the largest fintech companies in the world, offering the broadest portfolio of solutions for financial institutions of all sizes. It is headquartered in London, England and is considered the third-largest financial services company in the world.

Round 1: Aptitude

After my resume got shortlisted, I was invited for an aptitude test that involved about 30 questions of quants to be solved in 40 minutes. The difficulty level of all the questions was quite easy so, I had solved most of them in under 30 minutes. After that, I received an email that I have cleared this round and will be notified about the further process in some time.

Round 2: Sample Written Assessment

After clearing aptitude round, I was given a sample written assessment to work on. I was given an SRS that was basically a technical guide and I had to understand it and provide a well-written version of some of the parts which they had mentioned in the separate document. Since, I already have experience with this kind of work, I was able to perform it and within the deadline of 2 days, I had submitted the sample through email.

Round 3: Virtual Interview

After this, I got an email stating that I have cleared the previous round, and I am invited for a virtual interview round with Finastra. Needless to say, I was overjoyed. There were two senior technical writers who took my interview. They were very friendly and made me comfortable. After exchanging introductions, they asked me the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be a Technical Writer?
  • Why Finastra?
  • What qualities should a Technical Writer possess?
  • What is DDLC?
  • SDLC?
  • Being a computer science student, why are you moving towards writing?
  • Past experiences?
  • Tools which you have worked on?
  • If you are given a task, how do you move ahead with that?
  • What kind of writing you have done before?
  • Difference between content and technical writing?
  • Do you have a basic knowledge of finance?
  • Would you prefer coding or documentation?
  • How would you deal with communication siloes?
  • Proficiency of using MS word, flair?
  • How would you manage your time with academics and internship?
  • Any other hobbies?

Please Note: The interview process was very easy, they made me feel comfortable and allowed me to explain myself completely. When I said I did not know completely about DDLC, they encouraged me to give a vague answer and even changed the question to SDLC. Also, in the middle of the interview, I once lost my internet connection. I was panicking, and after almost 3-4 minutes, I was able to get back online. Guess what? They were patiently waiting for me and even asked me to calm down and relax before moving forward with my explanation. It was one of the best interviews I have had!

After 2 business days, I received a notification that I have cleared the round and I am selected for the position. My office location is Bangalore, but I have the flexibility to continue virtually. So, that’s what I am doing!
