In SSC, Banking, LIC, Railways, and other competitive exams, the General Awareness section plays an important role nowadays since it is a very scoring section. In this article, we will cover one of the topics of this section i.e “Countries and their Currencies”. This is a very easy topic and if students read it comprehensively they will score good marks and the possibility of their selection will increase.
African Currencies: An Introduction
- Africa has 54 sovereign states, the most of any continent.
- Egypt is the most popular tourist destination in Africa, attracting around 10 million visitors annually. While Egypt is best known for its pyramids, the Republic of Sudan has 223 of its pyramids, twice as many as Egypt.
- Four of the five fastest land animals live in Africa: the cheetah, the wildebeest, the lion, and the Thomson’s gazelle. All of these animals can run at speeds more than 50 miles per hour, with the cheetah reaching a top speed of around 70 miles per hour.
- Africa is home to the world’s largest living land animal, the African elephant, which can weigh between 6 and 7 tons.
- In 1974, scientists discovered the oldest known human ancestor in Ethiopia. The 3.2 million-year-old skeleton was named “Lucy” after the Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” which was played at the expedition camp.
- The Trans-Saharan slave trade developed in the 7th and 8th centuries when Muslim Arabs conquered most of North Africa.
Between the 7th and 20th centuries, the Arab slave trade (also known as slavery in the East) captured and exported 18 million slaves from Africa.
- The ancient Greeks and Romans originally used the term “Africa” only for the northern region of the continent. The word Africa means “sunny” in Latin and the word phrase means “without cold” in Greek.”
- Ethiopia features prominently in several ancient Greek dramas and poems. The Greek poet Homer mentions the Ethiopians in both the Iliad and the Odyssey as “a race without blame” and “among the noblest of men.
- Islam is currently the largest religion in Africa, closely followed by Christianity. These two religions represent 85% of the continent’s population, while only 15% of the population are non-religious or follow traditional African religions.
- Although Africa is the second largest of the seven continents on earth, it has the shortest coastline as there are very few protruding ridges and bays in its landscape. The deadliest animal in all of Africa is the hippopotamus.
- Barbarian pirates captured more than 1 million Europeans between the 16th and 19th centuries and sold them into slavery in North Africa.
- Tigers only live in Asia, not in Africa.
- The United States, China, India, New Zealand, Argentina, and Europe could find a place in Africa.
- The world’s largest frog, the Goliath frog, is found in Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon.
- Almost half of all gold ever mined in history comes from the Witwatersrand in South Africa. The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world and the third largest in the world after Antarctica and the Arctic. Located in North Africa, it is slightly larger than the continental US.
