I had my first interview as a front-end developer with Smarttrak Company. It came as a surprise phone call during a time when I had lost hope due to mass layoffs. After taking a 3-year gap for my UPSC preparation and experiencing the loss of both my grandfather and grandmother within a year, I had been struggling to choose between continuing with my preparation or pursuing a career as a software developer as a Computer Science graduate.

Eventually, I decided to take the developer path and received mentoring from my friends who were working in a well-known startup in Bangalore called Hashnode. I learned many new things such as Git, Github, CSS Flexbox, JavaScript (ES6) concepts, and the famous ReactJS library and Redux toolkit for building Single Page web Apps. I created several small projects in VanillaJS and some major projects in ReactJS.

After clearing the telephonic round interview, I was invited for a second round in which I was asked questions about hooks and states in ReactJS and then asked to program the same with a demonstration. The interviewers also discussed CTC with me. I then received a second mail inviting me for an interview with a senior developer. This interview began with the classic question “Tell Me About Yourself” and then moved on to programming and technical questions, concluding with a discussion about CTC. Both interviewers gave me positive feedback, but unfortunately, I received a mail stating that while I turned out to be a skilled candidate, they wished to consider me for a future vacant position. It was a bittersweet experience – on one hand, I was excited about the possibility of getting the job, but on the other hand, I was disappointed to lose it.
