Install Slack on Arch-based Linux Distributions (Manjaro)

Slack is a proprietary application mainly used for business communication by many multinational corporations. Team members can have discussions through various channels about the responsibilities of a project or task. The platform is owned by Salesforce Inc. and has a userbase of more than 10 million around the world. The Slack application is a free-to-use application but it also comes with a premium version with some extra perks. The application is available for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS operating systems.

Slack is a closed-source application and is not available in the Arch repositories. Hence, we cannot install it using Pacman. This article will discuss the most common way to Slack on Arch/Manjaro/Chakra. For this tutorial, we are going to use the Yay AUR helper, which is one of the many AUR helpers that can be used to install AUR packages.

Installing Slack on Manjaro Linux

Step 1: Update and upgrade your system by running

$ sudo pacman -Syu

Step 2: Before installing yay, install the basic dependencies like git and base-devel group packages.

$ sudo pacman -S --needed base-devel git

Step 3: Install yay by running the following

$ git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/yay-git.git

$ cd yay-git

$ makepkg -sri

Step 4: Verify the installation by running.

$ yay --version

Step 5: Use yay to install the Slack desktop client.

$ yay -S slack-desktop

Step 6: Launch the Slack client from the menu once the installation is complete.

Step 7: Now sign in to your Slack account by entering your credentials.

Step 8: Complete the process of creating a workspace by entering the details of your organization, team, team members, and e-mail addresses.

Step 10: Finally, start using Slack as per your requirements.
