IITs in India: IIT Kharagpur was the first Indian Institute of Technology to be established in 1951. Currently, the total number of IITs stands at a whopping 23. The Indian Institutes of Technology are autonomous public institutes of higher education governed by the 1961 Institutes of Technology Act. The Act has designated the IITs as “Institutions of National Importance”. They’re considered the most prestigious engineering colleges in India, and getting admission into their B.Tech course is extremely competitive.

In 2023, the total number of BTech seats in all the IITs put together is around 16,053. So, of all the aspiring candidates appearing for JEE Advanced examination, less than 1% get admission into an IIT. According to the NIRF engineering ranking of 2023, eight IITs are placed in the top 10 engineering schools in India. To get admission in any of the 23 IITs, aspirants need to qualify for JEE Mains as well as appear in the JEE Advanced examination.
