Alphabet Inc. announced yesterday that Google would delete all inactive accounts not used in the last two years. This is a security measure to prevent threats and hacks.

Google to Delete Inactive Accounts Starting December

The company has recently announced that if your Google account has not signed in for the last two years, it will be deleting all its data across all Google’s workspace, that is, content and all other information across Google Drive, YouTube, Google Meet, Google calendar and also your photos stored in Google Photos.

This information is currently only for personal accounts, not organizations, businesses, or school accounts.

How did it start?

In 2020, Google announced that the content from all inactive Gmail accounts would be removed from the core. But in this announcement, there won’t be any account deletion.

But as per the announcement made yesterday, Google will start sending notifications to the account’s email inbox and its corresponding recovery email given at the time of account curation.

Is this the Elon Musk Effect?

This announcement was made following last week’s notice by Elon Musk saying that Twitter would be removing all the accounts that have been inactive for the last few years. Twitter made this action to clear up the abandoned handles and accounts.

Elon Musk has been making many changes on Twitter, and while some of those decisions have been criticized, this might be welcomed. All the accounts that have been inactive or dormant for quite a long time will be removed from Twitter.

In a recent tweet by Elon Musk, he stated that all the inactive accounts would be ‘purged.’ This might lead to a drop in the follower count for many users across the platform.

Elon Musk Tweeted All Dormant Account will be Deleted

A user asked Elon Musk to reconsider this decision, as many good accounts might get lost too. Elon Musk responded that these accounts would be archived rather than permanently deleted.

Elon Musk has also appreciated all the content creators on the platform. He has also announced that no charges will be deducted for 12 months from their earnings directly from Twitter. However, after one year, all the content creators will have a deduction of 10 percent as their commission.

Recently Twitter rolled out the feature of subscriptions where content creators can curate content, especially for their paid subscribers. This feature can be turned on from the monetization sector on Twitter.
