Quick Overview

Google Maps update, now displays local weather conditions, temperature, and AQI in a specific area.

The info in the box updates as you move around the map and disappears when you tap on something.

Reveals a six-hour forecast and “feels like” temperature. It may not be available on all devices yet, indicating a phased rollout.

Google Maps is getting a new feature, just like iOS. Which will help you see the local weather conditions, temperature, and AOI in specific areas when using the Weather App. The feature has started rolling out in recent weeks and is finally seeing wider availability now. For this users need to be on the latest version of the app on their Android devices for it to show up.

Google Maps on iOS has already been enjoying this feature and now it is finally here for Android users as well. The feature first showed up in October. To save you time looking up the weather info for a place, Google Maps now shows you the weather of that area on the screen in a small window just under the search bar.

What is the Google Maps Update

This new Google Maps Update is a game-changer. Now it allows you to see the local weather conditions and temperature of any place in particular while using the app. Users will see that the icon used here is different from the Google Weather app, but tapping on the box works the same.

Just like in iOS, the information in that box updates as you move around the map. And the box will disappear if you tap on something else. If you tap on the weather icon, you’ll get more details, like a six-hour forecast and the “feels like” temperature. Plus, tapping on the AQI gives you a peek at the current air quality map layer.

Weather Integration in Google Maps

Google Maps get updates on temperature, rain, and air quality from The Weather Channel. If you wish to know more about the location’s weather, you can simply check out the expanded air quality information. The box shows you additional weather information for the selected area.

Having a weather forecast on Maps just makes sense, especially when it comes to navigation. As you navigate around the map, the weather information switches up on the fly, giving you a real feel for what’s happening right where you are.

When Can You Use Google Maps Update on Your Phone

The update is already rolling out on Android, but is not available on all devices yet, meaning this is a phased rollout. You could try checking for updates to Maps on the Play Store, you can also try to force-close the app and restarting if you already have the latest version. If these methods don’t work, you may need to wait for a server-side switch from Google.

More Updates For Google Maps on the Way

Recently, Google also announced that it would be launching a new generative AI feature that will help in improving discovery in maps. This feature uses artificial intelligence to help users discover new places. It will use large language models (LLMs) to choose which places to recommend if the user is confused about where to go. These recommendations according to Google will be made according to the user’s specific needs.

The feature is currently only rolling out to Local Guides in the US.

Conclusion

The introduction of this real-time weather overlay in Google Maps for Android is significant in enhancing user experience and safety. This feature will empower users with up-to-date weather information. As Google continues to innovate, the newfound bond between mapping and weather data looks promising for the future.
