Figure matrix is a non-verbal reasoning topic that is very important from the SSC CGL exam point of view. Figure matrix involves completing a matrix of shapes, where each shape is connected through a rule. In Figure matrix questions, you are given a matrix of shapes with one or more missing shapes, and you are required to identify the missing shape(s) based on the pattern and relationship between the other shapes in the matrix, it could be changed in color, lines, structure, addition or removal of anything in the shape, rotation, change in position, etc., you need to observe all the figures carefully to deduce the missing figure.

How to solve figure matrix questions?

Follow the below steps to solve any type of figure matrix questions:

  1. Step 1: Understand the matrix: Scrutinize all of the patterns, try to identify any patterns or rules, and pay attention to the orientations, directions, or any changes you notice.
  2. Step 2: Identify the missing figure: Try to apply the pattern above to find the missing matrix figure.
  3. Step 3: Cross-verify: Cross-check your answer with each alternative. We can see two or more similar patterns with minor differences.

Figure Matrix: Non-Verbal Reasoning Questions and Answers

Let’s explore some important questions based on the figure matrix with detailed explanations to give you a better understanding of the topic.

Q1. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Solution: [use a, b, c ,d to form options]

The correct answer is (c) as the number of components in each row is either increasing or decreasing from left to right. In the third row, it increases. In each step, one pattern is added. In row 1 with increase in step leaf is increasing. In row 2 line is decreasing.

Q2. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-10

Solution: [use a, b, c ,d to form options]

The correct answer is (c), we can see that the opposite two semicircles are filling up as we move towards the right. The circles that are filled are vertical semicircles.

Q3. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-03

Solution: [use a, b , c,d to form options]

Option (b) is the right answer, By carefully observing we can see last figure in each row comprises of parts that are not common to the first two figures. Here first and second figures are getting combined and the common line is deleted after combining the figures. Red-marked lines are common in the first two figures.

Figure-Matrix-04

Q4. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-05

Solution: [use a, b, c,d to form options]

Option (a) is the correct answer. Firstly, We can observe the center circle and line is moving either in a clockwise direction or anti-clockwise.

Secondly, the outer shapes i.e. rectangle, circle, and triangle are moving in a loop, one after the other in this sequence only.

Figure-Matrix-06

Q5. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-07

Solution: [use a, b, c ,d to form options]

We can observe one line is increasing in each subsequent figure. Option (b) is the correct answer.

Figure-Matrix-08

Q6.  Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-09

Solution: [use a, b, c,d to form options]

The number of dots in the second figure is clearly twice that of the first figure in the upper row.

Similarly, the number of dots in the second figure in the lower row must be twice the number of dots in the lower first figure. As a result, the total number of dots in the missing segment is = 2×3 = 6. As a result, (d) is the correct answer.

Q7. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-01

Solution:[use a, b , c ,d to form options]

We can observe, that combining the first and third figures of each row makes the second figure. So, option (d) is the correct answer.

Q8. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives to complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-15

Solution: [use a, b , c,d to form options]

Option (d) is the correct answer. In each row (and column), the superimposition of all three figures results in a darkened circle.

Q9. Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives that would complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-13

Solution:[use a, b , c ,d to form options]

In the question figure, all the arrows are headed in the same direction. They are all pointing in an anticlockwise direction. So the answer can either be (b) or (d). In (b), the shape of the arrow is unnecessarily peculiar. Hence the only shape that fits the matrix will be (d).

Q10. Select the correct option from 1 to 8.

Figure-Matrix-14

Solution:

Option 8 is the correct answer. We can visualize the third figure as the superimposition of the first and second figures.

Q11.  Select the correct option from 1 to 8.

Figure-Matrix-16

Solution:

Option 3 is the correct answer. As we can see in each row pattern is increasing. In row 1 circle increased from 1, 2, to 3, and in row 2 pair of two circles was added Similarly in row 3, the group of three circles increased.

Q12.  Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives that would complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-11

Solution: [use a, b, c ,d to form options]

Option (b) is the correct answer. The side triangle is moving clockwise in the corner of the square.

Q13. Select a suitable figure from the six alternatives that would complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-18

Solution:

Option 4 is the correct answer. The rhombus diagonal is removed in the next figure of the first row. Similarly in the second row Lines are removed from the square.

Q14.  Select a suitable figure from the eight alternatives that would complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-12

Solution:

Option 4 is the correct answer. After combining the 1st and 2nd figures upper and lower figures are combined and the 3rd figure is formed. Hence after combining the first and second figures from 3rd row circle will be placed upward and the Rhombus will be downward

Q15.  Select a suitable figure from the four alternatives that would complete the figure matrix.

Figure-Matrix-17

Solution: [use a, b , c,d to form options]

Option (b) is the correct answer. The first and third figures are mirror images of each other.
