I am a fresher about to graduate from a tier two engineering college in India. As part of my campus placement Drive, I recently finished my interview processes for the position of Product Analyst at DeltaX. Product roles are extremely important for a company and they usually don’t hire freshers for these roles. But some companies do and luckily for me DeltaX decided to come to my college for hiring. I finished the interview process and got hired, I’m about to start my professional journey at DeltaX soon. Here is the interview procedure and some tips that I felt would help others looking for similar roles.

Interview Procedure

I had a total of 4 rounds of interviews including a cultural round.

  1. Online Test
  2. Product Design Task
  3. Design Review interviews
  4. Cultural round with Team Lead

Online Test:

The first round was a basic aptitude test. It felt like a filtering round. The questions were of average difficulty. Anyone who has been preparing for aptitude tests can clear it easily.

Product Design:

This was the best part of the whole procedure.

All the shortlisted candidates were given a problem statement to design a web application to meet the needs of clients. You try to understand the problem and start building solutions from scratch. The end product is a design of the web application. They were not looking for design skills but our way of approaching and solving the problem.

We were made to write SRS ( Software Requirements Specification ) Documents for the application we made. we explain how we understood the client’s problems and how each feature in our application solves the issue.

Never copy something from the internet, it’s more important that you understand your solution very well. the rest of the rounds depends on it.

Design Review:

The candidates were shortlisted based on the previous task. This round was a face-to-face interview with a designer in the firm. We went through each of the features of my design and tried to bring up possible issues the user may face, different end cases and possible solutions to make the app work even better. The experience was great and the interviewer was chill and guided me through the process.

I had two more design review rounds each pealing one more layer of skin and going deeper into the solution.

The last round was with the founder of the company himself and was an unforgettable experience.

To err i humane, During these rounds, you will probably be bombarded with tons of ways your design could fail. don’t feel bad it is nearly impossible to get everything right the first time, the key is to iterate and improve. Each review round will leave you better informed than before so learn from those rounds and make your product better in the next round

Cultural Round:

This one was with my potential Team Lead. The interview had a few technical questions related to the job role and some questions to check my analytical skills and data interpretation. I was shown a fully messed up Excel sheet and asked to figure out what each row of data meant. This was the most difficult part of the interview because I was unprepared.

Conclusion

So that’s it. The interview process was closely related to my actual job role at the firm. let me know if there are people out there looking to get into a product or who are already in this field. I am learning more and more about the field of product management and working to build a career in it. would love to share what I learn and also learn more from others.
