Tableau is the most used visualizing tool as it has multiple features that are user-friendly and can be connected to various databases and to multiple databases at once. It can combine data from multiple databases.

What is Greenplum in Tableau?

Greenplum is one of those databases that Tableau can connect to and fetch data from(Greenplum is a big data technology based on MPP architecture and the Postgres open source database technology. ) Let us see how we can connect to it in detail.

Here are the steps to follow :

Below is the page which we will be able to see when we open Tableau Desktop. There are various databases under connect section as you can see on the left side in the below picture. Click on more(left bottom) to see all the databases to which Tableau can connect to.

As we can see all these data bases names visible as in the below picture, Look for Pivotal Greenplum Database or enter it in the search option above and then click on it.

Then, you would be able to see a pop up like below. Enter all the details(Server, Port, Database, Username, Password) related to your Greenplum database connection and click on Sign in.

Then, A screen will open as below where you will be able to see all the tables or views present in your database over here on the left side.

As you can see all the tables, search for the required table and Either you can drag the table to the center to create a data set and make necessary relationships or joins between tables directly.( If you want to combine different tables from the data base, you can drag those tables and either create a join based on the logic and field or relationship based on the field.)

Or you can drag new custom SQL which is below the tables section which is visible in the bottom left in the below picture, to the center and enter your query over there which might consist of one single table or multiple tables and logics based on your requirement and click ok as shown below.

For the connection, which is available behind filters as in the below pic, either select live connection for the data source to be reflected immediately based on the changes in the data base or extract connection for it to extract the data and store it over Tableau which makes the performance better.

Now, your data based on your logics is fetched from the Greenplum and you can proceed on creating any data source filters or further analysis using the data.
