Ellora Caves – Overview:

Ellora Caves is a world heritage site included by UNESCO located in Sambhaji Naar, Maharastra India. The site is famous for its Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples and caves. Ellora caves were built during the Rashtrakuta dynasty which constructed Hindu, and Buddhist caves and Jain caves were constructed by the Yadava dynasty. There are over 100 caves at this site. But for tourists only 34 caves are open. Among the 34 caves, 17 are Hindu caves, 12 are Buddhist caves, and 5 are Jain caves. It is not only famous for its artistic creation but also for its sanctuaries which are devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. They illustrate the spirit of tolerance through outstanding architectural activities.

Ellora Caves – Reflection and Designs:

Ellora brings the civilization of ancient India to life again with its sequence of monuments from 600 to 1000 CE. It includes the architectural and sculptural elements that bear witness to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The designs are designed such as the monasteries, sanctuaries, and monolithic temples which belong to three different faiths. The paintings, forms and designs, rock-cut architecture, sculpture, and unfinished temples are the main characteristics of this cave. The Hindu caves present there are the most dramatic designs and the Buddhist caves have the simplest ornamentation.

Ellora Caves – Construction:

Besides being a site of the trade route, Ellora caves serve as lodgings for the traveling Buddhist and Jain monks. The temples and monuments are carved from the local cliff rock in the 6th to 8th centuries. The archaeologist had claimed that it would have taken more than a hundred years to finish the temple construction but in reality, it took only 18 years to complete it. The caves are a series of 34 monasteries and temples. There are 35 caves and rock-cut temples mainly composed of volcanic Basalt rock. Ellora caves are privately known as ‘Verulleni’. The caves are always open for visiting except Tuesday.
