Empire State Building: History

The Destined space was never always occupied by this mega-structure; prior to its existence, the space was held by Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The beginning of the idea for the Empire State Building was just a mere competition between Walter Chrysler and John Jakob Raskob to build the taller building. As a result, came out the famous Chrysler Building and The Empire State Building. The chosen architect firm for the completion of The Empire State Building was Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon. Starting on 17 March 1930, the construction only took 410 days to complete.

The project was completed before the scheduled time on April 11 1931 but was opened on 1st May 1931. It turned out to be the world’s most famous office building, a historical landmark and was named “America’s favorite architecture” according to a poll counting by the American Institute of Architects. It was the tallest building for almost 40 years until it was succeeded by World Trade Center in 1972. It was named after New York’s nickname, which is Empire State. The exact date is unknown but according to one of the oldest documents, in a letter by George Washington dated 1785, he, while admiring New York’s strength during the American Revolution, represented New York as “the seat of the Empire”.
