Kon’nichiwa, everyone! It is the most common way of saying hello to anyone in Japan. The people there still follow the tradition they have forged with. They still greet others by bending and bowing. Moreover, Japan is known to have the best traditional culture in the World. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, a city, that is famous for being expensive and crowded. It has many beautiful sightings, art culture, tasty delicacies, and landmarks. Out of which, the best heard and known is Tokyo Tower. So, let us dig in for it.

Tokyo Tower: Overview 

Tokyo Tower is a vertical freestanding tower from 1958 located in Shiba-Koen district, Minato City, Tokyo, Kanto region of Japan with co-ordinates 35˚39’31” N 139˚44’44” E. It stands at 333m and is famed as the second-tallest tower in Japan. Tokyo Tower Company Ltd. owns it and it serves as a communication and TV broadcasting antenna, though the main income comes from tourism and antenna leasing.

People often call it the sister of the Eiffel Tower, as Tokyo Tower seems very similar to it. The mega-structure offers two Observation decks, each providing lovely vistas to the Tourists. The top deck offers a bird’s view of the whole city and a distant view of Tokyo Skytree and Mt. Fuji. At the bottom of the tower, the base area is called Foot Town which offers restaurants and a shopping complex for tourists and regular visitors. It also has an entertainment zone popularly known as Red Tokyo Tower where visitors can interact with e-sport activities and games.

Tokyo Tower: Design

Tokyo Tower is a 333m communication and broadcasting tower. The tower style is based on lattice-tower architecture, which is a vertical standing tower with a steel frame design. It is painted white and international orange to remain visible to air traffic.
The tower is made up of 4,000 tons of steel. It has 15 floors and 4 elevators serving as a direct way to the middle deck at 150m and the top observatory deck at 250m. 
The base of the tower is a 4-story building, Foot Town, which offers entertainment, shopping, restaurants and so more.

  • 1st Floor consists of a reception hall, the Aquarium, a restaurant, a Family Mart convenience store, and a souvenir shop.
  • 2nd Floor consists of Food and shopping complex.
  • 3rd Floor is reserved for the Guinness World Records Museum Tokyo.
  • 4th Floor holds Tokyo Tower’s trick art gallery for visitors.
  • And, Roof has an amusement park dedicated to kids.

Tokyo Tower: History

The man known as the Father of earthquake-proof design is Tachū Naitō, who served as an architect for the project with Nikken Sekkei Ltd. being the engineering partner in 1957 and it was completed on 23rd December 1958. The design was obviously inspired by the Eiffel Tower, the love paradise of Paris. It was primarily built as a broadcasting tower as well as to symbolize post-war Japanese society and the comeback in the rising of the country’s economy.
The Tower was famed as the tallest tower in Japan until 2010, when Tokyo SkyTree, which is also, a broadcasting tower being 624m surpassed it.
On 11 March 2011, the tip of Tokyo Tower received partial damage and got bent a little when it was hit by the Tōhoku earthquake, which was the strongest earthquake in recorded history with a magnitude of 9.0-9.1, and also known to cause a tsunami.
